Where to stay for a Madrid 3 day visit

I will be on my own for 3 days in mid-March, visiting Madrid before meeting my husband in Seville. Looking for recommendations for which area of the city to stay in and any particular hotels or inns you've liked. I prefer a mid-price range place in an interesting, rather than super touristy part of town. I keep seeing Room Mate inns popping up on searches so if you've used them, I'd love to know your thoughts. I won't be going to the bars on my own and I want an area that is safe for a solo female to walk and wander. I'm comfortable walking and using public transit when needed.

thanks!

Hi Diane,
My husband and I stayed at the Room Mate Alba last April and we loved the hotel and the location. We thought they were very friendly, the rooms were pretty, and the hotel was on a great street with a local feel with cafes, wine bars, and little shops. We were able to walk to the market, the Palace, the Plaza Mayor etc. I would feel safe staying in that location by myself. Steer clear of hotels on Gran Via and Sol if you don't want a touristy location. We are going to stay at Room Mate Alba again in April. I hope this helps.

Select a hotel close to the places you want to visit. No idea what mid-range means to you, but there are hotels of all price ranges and finding one to meet your budget shouldn’t be an issue.

I enjoy staying in the Salamanca neighborhood. It's upscale, interesting, and I felt very safe. As I recall I stayed at the AC Recoletos Hotel, which is part of the Marriott chain.
