4 days in Budapest

My wife and I are going to be traveling to Budapest in December for the Christmas markets. We will be arriving on the 14th, a Sunday, from Vienna. We finish up a RS tour there and plan on taking a train from there to Budapest.

Looking for ideas on hotels, restaurants and must see places. We are going through the RS book. But other ideas and input are welcome. We are currently looking in the District 6 area, Hotel Casati and a few others. Very interested in a guided tour as well. The Christmas markets are one of the reasons we are coming as well.

We just returned from our first trip to Budapest. It’s a lovely city - reminded us a lot of Paris but…a bit grittier? Which I liked - I prefer big European capitals where you feel like you’re actually part of the hustle and bustle of the everyday life for people who are living there. And, like Paris, Budapest is quite grand. We stayed at the Alice Hotel, which I believe I read about in this forum. Look up Mr. E - he has a ton of very useful recommendations, particularly for accommodations and restaurants. The hotel was a lovely business hotel on a very nice stretch of Andrassy Ut, convenient to City Park and Széchenyi Baths, and we liked taking the historic M1 metro line. That said, when we went across the river to explore Buda, I really liked the vibe on that side of the Danube. Personally, I would like to stay there if we ever go back. It was more quaint and a little sleepy, so honestly, I guess it just depends on what type of atmosphere you are going for. Staying on the Pest side is likely more convenient, though it’s not like it’s hard to get around via public transportation or Bolt if walking distances are too far.

We had one of the best meals of our lives at Parisi Passage restaurant. Amazing service, as well.

Don’t miss the Dohany Street Synagogue or Terror Haza Museum. Obviously the baths are a must and worth a day or two (we did Széchenyi and Gellert). We also really enjoyed the Hospital in the Rock tour. No matter where you stay, make sure you are on the Buda side at and after sunset, so that you can fully appreciate the Parliament all lit up. In my opinion, it was the single greatest sightseeing experience in Budapest to just sit on the banks of the Danube and look at that parliament building all aglow. Absolutely magical!

Four days is a good visit. You will be able to see 90% of the primary sights. TexasTravelMom put a link to a hotel thread .... unfortunately that thread got locked because of lack of activity so, yes, use that, but here are some updates to it: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/hotels-in-budapest-549c0b2b-b903-4b65-88a3-003993c605b0

With dates, ages (over 65 or under 40), interests, etc, people will have better ideas for you (we have a strong support group here for Hungary). For hotels, what sort of hotel? 5 or 4 or 3 star. You like nice or a roof is good enogh?

Not too early to book your hotel. December opera and theater tickets are on sale https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/hungary/concerts-in-budapest. Time to buy them is now.

Parliament tickets are probably not on sale yet, but check. Check often. When they do go on sale, but them. https://jegymester.hu/event-host/900/parlament

Train tickets can wait until 30 days prior, but buy no reason not to buy them when you see the discount ticket prices shown on the MAV ticket site https://jegy.mav.hu/. Yes, might be better to buy them from MAV and buy seat resservation and go First Class is you can.
