Other than the Opera house, what are some venues you would suggest for an evening concert. We will be in town April 28th until afternoon of May 3rd. We want to do a day tour of the Opera house but I fear I would fall asleep during the length of an Opera without being better adjusted to the time change.
Ideally I am looking for something that we could come or go during the performance like at a nice restaurant or maybe around 1.5- 2 hours max if it is a performance. I love the cello or quartets and local music to the places I am visiting, but also open to a play or other types of music. Thank you for any help, I am not sure why I am finding this so hard to find performances online.
Budapest Operett Theater
Opus Jazz Club
Orfeum
Budapest Jazz Club
Hungarian House of Music
Liszt Academy of Music
Eiffel Studios
A dozen different restaurants.
And more:
There are several venues for concerts and performing arts events in Budapest. One of the best is the Mupa concert hall.
www.Mupa.hu
Very good, I forgot MUPA. Sort of the equivelent to a major city symphony hall. Best is sort of a relative term. Here is the English page https://mupa.hu/en.
For a great dinner and jazz, Opus.
For the best classical in a stunning venue Liszt.
For the best classical student performances, Liszt.
Broadway musicals, Operett.
Greatest mix of styles, music and performance, Eiffel.
Modern Hungarian informal, often free, always good, amazing modern venue, very Hungarian, Hungarian House of Music.
Imported special performances MUPA.
For Vaudeville, Orfeum.
I also forgot the Vigadó Concert Hall, some great musical performances and runs the gambit from classical to Jazz. Last year mostly jazz and Hungarian Pop.
And i know a basement bar with Gypsy Music.
Does that make "Several" LOL
There may also be a nice hotel by the Basilica that has a nice restaurant and bar that might have a trio or similar. I'll check this week. Pianos and gypsies are fairly common in a lot of places other than the list of restaurants that I sent you. If I think or hear of something special I'll post it.
And not to beat the horse
Check this out: https://budapestitavaszifesztival.hu/en/program/ it begins while you are here .... maybe in 2025.
Opus does have some interesting selections while you are in town. You will need to purchase a ticket for the show AND you will need to book a table for dinner.... Seperate actions. https://opusjazzclub.hu/koncertek
The Orfeum unfortunately only has POIROT AT THE ORPHEUM which is sort of an audiance included murder mystery.... alas in Hungarian. https://orfeum.hu/musor/
Hungarian House of Music. The performance on the 28th is good, the next insnt until the 4th and its a bit .... ehhhhh But when you are up around the city park, go visit the building. worth the look. https://zenehaza.hu/esemeny/a-budapesti-fesztivalzenekar-europai-zenekari-akademiajanak-koncertje
Linzt, sorry another strike out https://lfze.hu/programok?idopont=2025-05-01+to+2025-05-31
Vigado, symphony on the 30th. Nice rather less rigid setting for a concert. Right down on the Danube Corso
https://vigado.hu/web/en/programs/-/event/21102/oxford/20314
Spinoza, Klezmer Friday 2 May. http://spinoza.hu/eloadasok/klezmer-pentek-vacsoraval-sabbathsong-klezmer-band/
MUPA does have shorter (and longer) performances all day long most days. https://mupa.hu/en/events/event-calendar/2025/4 The facility is sort of out of the tourist center, but not too hard to reach. I think it was then Prince Charles that commented that the new modern building was among the ugliest he had ever seen. He was correct. But the inside is nice and the acoustics are said to be good.
Operett isnt quite what I think you were looking for, but I always enjoy the shows. Always very well done and a couple to choose from while you are here https://operett.hu/musor
Eiffel looks like two interesting musical preformances while ou are here. A bit out of the center but a really, really interesting old building .... coverted railway repair facility. https://www.opera.hu/en/programme/2024-2025/lukacs-miklos-project/eiffel-art-studios-miklos-banffy-stage-2025-04-29-2030/
You have a great list here! Now I have to finish checking for MY dates!
I haven’t been to all that Mr. É posted, but probably half. If it were me, I would grab dinner and show at Spinoza for something it would be harder to find elsewhere. You are seated for dinner, then move to a small performance space for the show, then back to your table for dessert. Plenty of moving around. Ha!
You could also check out St. Stephan’s Basilica for an organ concert. They are generally about an hour. I would look but for some reason the website isn’t pulling up for me. My notes say I went to a free one on a Wednesday.
I forgot about the church concerts! TTM, do you have the "official" ticket site addresses?
Thought of another. A38: https://www.a38.hu/en
Európa Kiadó on the 30th !!!
I wish I had a link for all the church concerts in one place, but here’s the link for the schedule at St. Stephan’s
