I've been thinking about what to do while overseas. When I traveled to the UK a few years back, I purchased a physical sim card. It was fine. I ended up losing my original SIM card in the travel, and had to buy a new one when I got back to the US. I'm not saying that's a dealbreaker but...just something to keep in mind.
A good friend of mine travels overseas pretty frequently and has always just relied on Wifi. I was leaning this way for a bit. It seems like the most simplistic approach for sure. A lot of places have Wifi nowadays, free Wifi at that, so I feel like it's doable.
That said....I feel like I use my phone more frequently than I even realize. Maybe I need to check a restaurant's hours on the fly. Maybe I need to pull up my email to check something real quick. Maps are hugely crucial. All of these are things that CAN be solved (check hours before I go out, save emails to my phone, use paper maps) But, there will be 1 or 2 or several situations that will come up, that I won't even see coming.
Enter the eSim game. It gives me the benefit of nothing physical to keep track of and access to the internet that I want and potentially need. So, I have decided to go with an eSim. One decision down.
I have narrowed it down to 3 options- all with pros and cons. No clear cut winner.
Airalo- this seems to be the one that comes most highly recommended. Also prices are decent. Data allowance is a slight concern. I'd like to believe that 5GB would be enough. $20 for the Europlan. But, when compared to unlimited data, 5GB seems so small. It also doesn't include calls or texts. Which is fine-ish. I have a Google Voice number so I should be fine.
Holafly- this was initially my first choice. Unlimited data, and also, up to 60 mins of phone calls is a huge draw. (I can receive calls from home but cannot dial out) It is the priciest option at $27-34. Unfortunately, it is limited by number of days. One option is 7 days, the next is 10 days. I would need something for 8 days. I hate to bump up to the 10 day option. Now...I could probably strategically go without either at the beginning or the end.
Bouygues Telecom- This feels like the compromise. At $22, it is right in between. Data isn't unlimited but it is 15 GB which I imagine should be plenty. Calls and texts are included (within Europe only). I haven't heard or read much about this particular company though. It's not one of the big ones that seem to get mentioned frequently.
Does anyone have experiences that they can share or recommendations? Thanks!
