Stockholm itinerary in June with a couple of days in Tallinn

Hello,
My partner and I are planning a trip to Stockholm in June and we would appreciate any thoughts on our proposed itinerary. It will be our first time to Scandinavia. We're both in our 50's and love to walk a city but aren't very outdoorsy. No car on this trip, the bus and train when our feet are tired or slow. We've reserved a place to stay in Kungsholmen from 2 June through 12 June, but we can still cancel or change it. Haven't bought plane tickets yet. The flight we're looking at arrives about 545pm. Finnair from LAX to HEL to ARN.
We would like to spend more time in Tallinn but didn't want to give up any Stockholm, and 10 days is about our limit for this trip. We could go a little later in the summer if that would be better for any reason, but we can't stay much longer.
We talked about Visby instead of Tallinn, but settled on the overnight cruise. That just sounded fun to us. We are looking at Tallink Silja for that.
The information on this forum has been wonderful. I'll include a few threads that I found useful if anyone else comes across this one.

Thank you!

If you want more time in both cities, forget the ferry and fly. It's a one hour flight.

With the ferry, you get to experience the ferry. However, when you arrive in Tallinn, it will be too early to check in to your hotel and you will have luggage. Make sure your hotel will hold your luggage for you so you can go out and sightsee.

Flying in to Tallinn the same time or even later than you would leave on the ferry means when you wake the next morning you are ready to hit the ground running.

I flew into Tallinn last May, called for a Bolt car (similar to Uber) and was at my hotel in 20 minutes. (Door to door.) There is a specific area for Bolt pick up that is well signed and the same area as for taxis.

If you have time, ferries can be fun. But if time is limited, flying might be a better option.

Others will have different opinions.

Hi Frank,

Flying was our first inclination, but this forum convinced us to take the ferry at least one way. The scenery sounded like a great experience. The time issue is why we chose to fly back. We are keeping our rental in Stockholm for the duration of the trip. We can leave luggage there and just bring day packs to Tallinn and on the plane home avoiding any extra charges.

That's a great tip on using Bolt. I've never used that service, I'll add it to our travel apps.

Thanks!

Kevin

How did you come up with this itinerary? You're flying to Stockholm via Finland, taking a side trip to Tallinn before you return to Sweden and then fly home via Finland. That is quite a lot of backtracking. My suggestion is that you start in Sweden and then take the ferry to Tallinn. But instead of returning to Stockholm you take the ferry to Finland and fly home. That makes more sense from a geographical point of view. Assuming you're flying Finnair, but there are many other good options as well.

And yes, the ferry is nice. Especially if the weather good. Sitting on the outer deck and watching the thousands of islands in archipelago go past is a very nice view. And yes, the ferry takes longer than flying, but you're spending most of that time sleeping. So when you look a bit closer at it, you're really not saving that much time by flying.

Your plan for Sweden seems like a good plan. On the thursday you could add the changing of the guard since you are already at the palace. The Abba museum is a bit of a hit or miss depending on your interest, great if you're a fan but if you're not you might as well go somewhere else. Changing locations takes a bit of time, but you could spend the first two nights Uppsala to see Uppsala and Skokloster. Reaching Skokloster is a bit closer to Uppsala so you're probably saving time this way, despite having two different places to stay.

Hi Badger,

Helsinki is just a layover on our flight, I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear. I didn't find any non-stop flights from Los Angeles to Stockholm on google flights. It was either Helsinki, London, or Amsterdam. Finnair through Helsinki had the most convenient times for us. You do make a good point though, we could go home from Tallinn just as well if we bring our luggage with us. We will look at that.

We really are looking forward to the ferry! Some of your posts in other threads convinced us, thank you.

The changing of the guard would be great, I'll look to see the schedule and make sure we are there for that.

Good to know about the ABBA museum, we enjoy their music but I wouldn't say we are huge fans.

Skokloster and Uppsala seemed to be mostly equal travel time from Stockholm, not enough to make a difference anyway looking at google maps. From Stockholm C to Balsta on SJ43 and then UL311 to Skokloster, or from Stockholm C to Uppsala C on SJ40 both looked to be an hour or so. From Uppsala to Skokloster looks like more than 2 hours? The boat ride on the lake from Stockholm to Skokloster looked great, and we did schedule a whole day so maybe we will do that.

Thanks

Kevin
