Lay over in Moscow do we need a transit visa?

We have a overlay in Moscow, Russia do we need a visa or a transit visa?
If so where, how do we go about getting them.

Also what is available within the airport to pass the time? Flying to Italy we have about a 2 hour layover but coming back we have a 7 1/2 hour layover in the middle of the night.
Do they have a good place to catch some sleep or anything we need to watch out for while there?
Do they take US debit cards to buy food or should we have a few rubles on hand from our local bank? Also are there english speaking people in the airports for directions....?
