Rome to Pompeii train

Does anyone have updated information on the direct Rome to Pompeii train? Some sources say it runs every Sunday, some say only on third Sundays. Also, does anyone have a link on where to buy tickets? Thanks.

Hi Peter -
I just checked the Trenitalia site for random dates in April and May and the trains you're asking about apparently are still only running on Sundays. It's the #9693 at 08:53 from Roma Termini to Pompei Scavi. The Pompei Link shuttle bus runs between the Pompei station and the excavation, and that bus ticket is included in the purchase. Going back to Roma Termini, it's the shuttle from Pompei Scavi at 18:15 to the #9568 train departing at 18:40. Find and book the trains on the Trenitalia website.

The info in this previous thread is still as current as I can find out there, and what appears on the Trenitalia website:

Thanks. When I go to the TrenItalia site I get "Access Denied." Is that because of the strike?

No. If that was the case I wouldn't be able to get into it either. If you are getting this message in Italian...

"La pagina non รจ disponibile.
Torna alla homepage cliccando qui."

... just click the red "cliccando qui". to override it.
And make sure you click "Accept" if asked to OK site cookies.

I can access that address either on Firefox (my regular browser) or MS Edge, which I use a few times a year. I don't think the problem is on the Trenitalia end, but I don't have an answer for you.

I trust you know the train involves a shuttle bus too. I cannot make your travel decisions for you, but I would just book a Frecciarossa on the day I want to go. There is the issue that you can't change a discounted, advance-purchase Frecciarossa ticket - just like an airline ticket. Then you would change to the jammed, hot Circumvesuviana train in Naples, which stops right at the Porta Marina entrance to the ancient site. This commuter train is quite do-able if you don't have any luggage. I just would not want to be restricted to one train a week in my travel planning.

Even with the Frecciarossa, it's a long trip from Rome for a day out. Remember to plan for extreme sun and heat from May to September. Pompeii is very exposed to the sun, and the stone streets heat up fast. It is a wonderful destination.
