Never! But seriously, it's a big continent. Some places will be absolutely packed, others won't be. Some places may be hot, others not. Take a step back and tell us:

1. What are you interested in? History, museums, culture, food, beaches, sitting in a cafe?
2. Do you have to fly to Milan, or are there other options?

Summer is generally not a good time for tourists anywhere in Europe as it's typically very crowded and some areas will be very hot. More northerly countries could have more pleasant temperatures. Air Conditioning is not as prevalent in Europe as it is in North America (at least at the present time) so travel there could be somewhat uncomfortable in summer.

I've found that it's always a good idea to plan trips to Europe well and reserve hotel rooms and some sights ahead of time. I use the Rick Steves guidebooks as they have good information on hotels, transportation and sightseeing.

I note you have written in a separate thread, "A friend of mine is willing to sell me her ticket for $450 each way from JFK New York to Milan"- as mentioned in that thread, airline tickets are generally not transferable. I would check this very carefully before making any plans as we certainly don't want you to become the victim of a scam!

Paris can be an unusual place in August. The Eiffel Tower, museums and other well known locations will be under siege from tourists. But at the same time the locals go off on their own travels, and those charming little suburban bistros known mostly to locals which get mentioned in a guide book/ forum could be closed! But the inter-continental airports are where they are and often not affected by what's going in in the city.

But I fear you have fallen to "american geography syndrome" and have the idea that there are only about 8 places in France and 11 in Italy worth visting. There are thousands - and not all are overrun with tourists. That said Venice is overrun, to the point that they now have an admission charge to the city!!!

So if you can find a cheap ticket to Paris take it, and then go to Strasbourg by train (the EU politicians will be off in August so that levels things out). Or fly to Milan (if it isn't a scam or not allowed) and go to Bologna and maybe a quieter lake east of Como.

Everybody's scaring me saying that it's not a good time to go in Aug. Because of all the tourists and the children I should wait till September is it true or is it not true? Can I work around it and still have a nice time I have time off from about August 6 through the 20th. I could go for a week and a half to two weeks August 6 through August 15. Or I could wait till September
