Ring Road or Golden Circle or.....

So, it turns out we can leave for Iceland a day earlier than I originally thought, which gives us 7 full days (8 nights) there, not counting arrival day (~7 a.m.) or departure day (~5 pm), right at the beginning of October.

I notice there are both 6 and 7 day ring road tours available. I'm a bit hesitant to book a tour that would put me in close quarters with up to 17 other people for several hours a day, and I've read some negative reviews about the comfort of the minibuses. Indeed, if it's like the one we had on our tour of the Daintree Rain Forest in Australia, where we were stuck at the very back, shoulder to shoulder with a third person, that gives me pause. Getting in and out was a bit challenging for us--we're old and not that bendy--and we were stiff from being unable to shift position very much. It was fine for a day, though, but if we had to do that for multiple days, that would definitely not be ideal. When I do a test booking for one tour I'm considering (max 15 guests), if I book to start on Day 2 of our trip, there are 4 spots left, so the bus could be absolutely full. If I test book to start on Day 3, there are 15 spots left, which could be promising, but I'm worried it could also mean the tour gets cancelled.

Private tours are much too expensive in Iceland.

Another option could be to book day tours or 2-3 day tours to the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It would be easier to deal with any discomfort for a shorter amount of time. But I have FOMO and don't want to miss out on seeing some spectacular Iceland scenery on what will likely be our only trip.

We'd rather not drive. Although we're used to winter driving, I absolutely hate it, and the driver would miss out on some of the scenery. It would be stressful. Also, since this is somewhat last-minute, it might be a hassle to try to book our own accommodations and such. We would also have to rush to get International Driver's Licenses, try to book a vehicle, etc.

So, Ring Road or shorter trips, closer to Reykjavik? Would we be missing out on a lot if we do the latter? (I suspect so and am prepared to suck it up, if need be, to see more.)

Tours do sound like the best option for you. I personally would not do a ring road tour in anything less than 10-12 days as you will be sitting the entire time and not experiencing what Iceland has to offer. We have been many times and still have not seen everything. I I get the FOMO, but try to just enjoy what you can. I know its hard;)

We have always self driven, but on our winter trips we do take day excursions so have been on those small buses many times. If you are coming in on an overnight flight, then keep the day of arrival light, meaning just wander Reykjavik on foot and get over jet lag that way. Then start the bulk of your trip in the morning.

October is actually my favorite time of year there. The weather is not full on winter yet, and the aurora has been very good to us on several trips during this time, and fewer people. Earlier in the month, when you will be there, should be ideal. Of course the weather in Iceland can be anything any time of year, but typically early October is good.

I would suggest doing a mix of day tour and multi day tours. Say a 3 day south coast tour, and a 2 day Snaefellsnes tour, and maybe the Golden Circle. The GC is my least favorite area, but that is just by comparison to everything else. I would go with a local company such as Troll, Arctic Adventure, NiceTravel or BusTravel Iceland. We have used all of them. Although the AA tour was cancelled due to weather, but dealing with them was very easy and they were great with communication. The tours with the others were great, and we used used Troll a handful of times on various trips.

BTW, in Iceland you do not need an IDP to drive:)

BB, I agree with Mikliz that I wouldn't attempt the ring road for under ten days. You would be rushing the whole time and wouldn't be able to enjoy anything.

I just got back from Iceland, where we spent seven nights, and just finished a trip report. Here's a link to it if you want to check it out. It might give you some ideas of what places you would like. I also kept a personal blog and there are a lot of photos of the places we went to, so I'll add a link to that as well if you want to check it out. Again, it might give you some ideas of places that you would like to see if you're trying to decide between one or the other. There are no ads in it. In fact, I pay extra to keep ads out. 😊

We really loved Iceland, and it's such a different and interesting place. It's like no other country I've been to. And as mikliz said, you do not need an international driver's license there. Everyone speaks English, and it's also a cashless society, so you won't need to get any money.
