When do you honestly predict you will be mentally prepared to travel to Europe given the current status of COVID-19? Month and Year. What will be some of your decision points?
Everything is speculation. My decision point will arrive when I have received the vaccination. My speculation is that could be late spring to early summer. If not, then about the same time the following year. In meantime we are saving so much money that we will able to fly business class as the reward.
Several months after a vaccine proves effective. Its possible but unlikely that I would travel before then if extensive antibody testing reveals a statistically significant number of people have antibodies. I dont relish being sick abroad (or having a family member be sick), regardless of how comfortable/uncomfortable I might feel about my 'odds' with the virus.
I am going to the dentist on Wednesday, so my tolerance for risk is not nil
I'm thinking Summer 2021 at the earliest. It's a bummer, because we were thinking about going to Nova Scotia as our 50th wedding anniversary trip. Now we'll be lucky to get an ice cream in Lizella, Georgia.
I'm mentally prepared now. The decision point will be when the countries I want to travel to have opened up to visitors. Hard to tell what month and year that will be, but if I had a vote in it, it would be this coming September.
As I already had a European trip planned, before Covid-19, for this November...I'm saying November 2020. As long as things are open and I can get there.
I am in the same situation as Ufkak - I'm awaiting the availability of an antibody test to see if I did in fact have C19 last month. If that result is positive, we will likely take our trip in Sept 2021. If it is negative, we will wait until we are able to get the vaccine.
There is much talk of a vaccine as early as Dec, but given the hundreds of millions of doses that need to be produced, and the priority scale of who is entitled to receive it and when, I think that vaccine availability simply for nonessential travel will be at or near the bottom of the priority list- so not for a couple of years, at least.

I guess I could ask if anyone who posted on that one feels differently now than they did then?
Mentally, I'm ready now, but I won't until I can travel without restrictions. I wish I had a crystal ball so I could give you a date. In the meantime I need targets and goals, so in my head, I'm preparing as if it will be next Spring, but no idea if that will be realistic. It's a moving target without a bullseye and so I'll continue to set potential dates and adjust as I learn more.
I wouldn’t plan anything till next summer at least .
Decision points? it’s pretty simple:
Both my husband and I are hired back by our respective employers who have furloughed us both.
International airports have worked out their new passenger flow systems in this COVID-19 world so that there are no snake-long queues.
Quarantines are no longer required.
My wish date for travel would be sometime in October, November, or December 2020.
That's probably not going to happen.
Mentally-prepared as soon as 14-day quarantine is no longer required after landing in Europe. I predict that somewhere in Europe will allow tourist-travelers from the U.S. by September 2020.
I’m with Brad above.
I will go to Switzerland in September as I have planned... If I can.

after landing in Europe.
I would also wait until quarantine is no longer required when returning to the States.
We will go as soon as we can. Leave for Italy Sept 29 this year for our first trip to Italy and international travel. As long as flights aren’t canceled and the museums and things we want to see are open we will go. If not we will go next fall!
My decision points for travel to Europe are:
- The country/countries I want to visit have no restrictions on entry to US citizens, no quarantine requirements, and most restaurants, museums, etc. are open.
- The US has no quarantine requirements for my return.
- There's a vaccine or antibody testing available in the US. I don't want to get it and I don't want to inadvertently infect anyone.
I'll be mentally prepared for travel when these conditions are met. I'm hoping it's no later that September or October of 2021. I retire then and am planning to spend at least a month in Europe.
I have a trip planned for England and Paris in September. As long as tourist sites are open and we can fly in and out without a quarantine period we are going. That isn't to say I'm flying completely blind - I plan on taking masks & gloves and if there is a tourist site where people aren't spread out I'll leave.
I’m the same as Kathy H above. Would add when I don’t have to wear a mask. I think this will be possible Spring 2022...2 years from now.
It's hard to know. I echo what others have said. I would add when I don't have to wear a mask everywhere I go.
Sadly, early fall 2021. Either the virus burns itself out (a hope) or a working vaccine has been widely distributed (a hope) by then.
I have no issues with those trying to travel earlier as long as they follow the golden rules: no crying like a baby over lost deposits, no refunds, flights cancelled, vouchers, museums/attractions closed, and developing a working English vocabulary that now includes an understanding of nonrefundable means nonrefundable and the “I’m a princess” (male and female) exception does not apply.
I am conflicted....
My crystal ball said Octobr 2020. My Ouija board hinted later at December 2020. But the gyspsy fortune teller said possibly in the spring. I'm waiting for my tea leaves to be read but the person who reads them is social distancing and can't see the tea leaves.
Personally, I will travel when the countries open up, hotels, restaurants and sights are open, and the WHO, CDC and State Department say it's okay to travel. I can't predict when that will be.
NO ONE KNOWS!!!!
@ DougMac
Good news item. Congratulations and best wishes to you both for next year.
Regards Ron
When I think about how fast the situation changed in late February and March, I hesitate to make any sort of guess about when I will travel again. On a pure gut level, though, I am not expecting to travel until 2022 at the earliest.
It all depends on vaccines, mutations (for better or worse), CDC recommendations, safety measures, infection rates, and such.
Effective vaccine +6 months
June 2021 --
Only if:
- The overall daily new infection rate drops considerably from where it is now.
- The place I go is not straining its medical resources to keep up with currently ill people.
- The place I want to go does not require quarantine.
- The US does not require quarantine when I return from wherever I go.
- There are available direct flights to and from my destination (no torturous routings to go around restrictions).
- I still have the financial ability to afford the trip.
While a vaccine would be nice, we will not know the actual effectiveness of whatever the winner in the contest of who gets approved first will be for several months after large scale vaccination begins. I have no desire to be in the first wave of volunteers in case it is ineffective or unforeseen severe side effects occur in a significantly large sample.
Frank II, could you please check your 8 ball?
At a minimum, I'll wait to get an antibody test to see if I already had a mild case, as I suspect.
No quarantine at my destination.
I can live with a quarantine when I get back home and would probably do that anyway.
Thanks for all the posts. Interesting to see what mind frames people are in at this time and their outlook on their future regarding travel. Be safe everyone.
Supposed to fly to Cal. from Germany in Oct. but am pretty sure this is not going to happen. I would prefer to get a full refund from Iceland Air now though. Not sure if they are doing this now.
I checked my Magic 8-Ball.
Question: Will I be able to travel where I want in June 2021?
