Walker's Haute Route

Chamonix to Zermatt. Has anyone walked all or part of this trail? My husband and I want to spend a few days and walk part of it on our own this fall. I am wondering how/where you could store your luggage if you don't have a vehicle.

Sorry I can't answer your question but I am most interested in what you end up doing and how many days you hike. Please do report back as this is definitely something I plan to do in the near future.

I have hiked with a few folks here in CO who have done a 'haute' route in Switzerland but not sure if it is the same one or somthing else.

Thanks for the link. I ordered this book on hiking this trail. I'll see what it says.

We aren't sure if we will do it this trip or wait until we can do more of the route. It seems from what I've read online that many do it with a paid tour so your luggage is brought from place to place by your tour people.

I am pretty sure the Haute Route and the Walker's Haute Route are 2 different trails. The Haute Route is the 'high' route and has some technical parts, glaciers to cross where you need to be roped up. The Walker's Route is a lower route for regular hiking.

The true Haute route is a skier's trek. My son did it with friends and a guide (required) for his 30th birthday. It indeed higher in the Alps than the so-called walker's Haute route. There are lots of trekking and adventure companies that guide the trip; with most you carry a backpack with your own essentials. You are staying in huts/ inns so do not need much.

If you just want to spend a few days, you might find a hotel in Chamonix that will store your luggage for you if you stay there before and after the trek. Then you just carry what you need. You will want to plan carefully and book the huts on inns in advance. End at a place with transport back to Chamonix.
