Questions on making reservation now or buying passes there?

Hi everyone!

Questions: wanting to know what reservations I absolutely need to make before leaving in order to avoid long lines and less crowds ( if possible) 😀

Okay here's the info: I am going with my 3 college age daughters. They would like to be more flexible, I would like to have most things reserved. Not sure exactly what they want to see. I know they love music, will want to see the major sites, and basically have mom plan it all out! Ha! This I is where I could use your help in knowing which of the sites are major for reserving now and which ones I can buy a combine pass to avoid lines. I have RS books which are extremely helpful, but would also like your guys expert opinions.

-June 13th - spending 3 days in Amsterdam, looking at Anne Frank Museum, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum,
Holland Pass,/ Museumkaart Pass?
-June 16th- 19th Munich, The Residenz/ Nymphenburg Palace,
Day trips-Dachau Camp and Neuschwanstein Cadtle
-June 20th-21st Venice- do I need to reserve anything there?
-June 22nd-25th Rome- I know I need to reserve the Vatican/ Borghese Gallery, planning on getting the Roma Pass to cover the colosseum , forum etc.
-June 26th-27th Cinque Terre- lots of hiking and sightseeing
-June 28th- 30th Gimmelwald- more hiking and hopefully tubing on top of the world!
-July 1st-3rd Paris- looking at buying the Paris Museum Pass for 2 days. Visiting the Louvre, Sainte-Chapelle, Versailles, Notre-Dame, and Eiffel Tower. ( planning on visiting late in the day, do I need to reserve?)
Open to suggestion for other places to visit as well.
Have really enjoyed researching RS books and reading this forum.
Can't wait to experience this with my girls!
Thanks in advance for all your help!

I've been to Nymphenburg several times and never had to make reservations. I've been to the Residenz and Dachau once each and didn't need reservations. I've been to the castles four times. Three times I didn't need reservations. The last time, the last Saturday of Oktoberfest, I went there and couldn't get in because I did not have reservations. I arrived a little after noon, and there was a long line, and they were already booking tours for late in the day. However, there was almost no line at the counter to pick up reservations.

You can make reservations for the castles at www.hohenschwangau.de.

You're asking about reservations for sights and not for lodging, so maybe you have all your lodging booked, but I just wanted to stress that, especially for when you'll be there, have your rooms(s) booked before you get to the Cinque Terre. We arrived in Riomaggiore without a reservation and managed to get the last room in town - but just barely, and it was bigger and more expensive that we needed. Still, a great place to be.

In Paris, just across the square in front of Notre-Dame, be sure to pop down into the Crypt, excavations showing a bit of Paris from ancient Roman times. Down the street from Sainte-Chapelle is the Conciergerie Prison, where Marie-Antoinette spent her last days, worth a stop. Both are on the Museum Pass, and you won't need reservations.

Your Roma Pass will come in handy at the Borghese Gallery. In Rome, don't miss the Roman-temple-under-an ancient church-under-a-newer-but-still-old church at the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano - fascinating!

-June 13th - spending 3 days in Amsterdam, looking at Anne Frank Museum, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum,

*********I can't speak about the Museumkaart (does it cover all three)? You definitely want reservations at all three places!

Day trips-Dachau Camp and Neuschwanstein Cadtle
******** I think you need reservations at Neuschwantstein Castle and I would visit Hohenswagau (sp) too! We went to Dachau with our BOE21 day tour so I'm not sure about reservations. It's a big place and our tour guide there was fantastic.

-June 20th-21st Venice- do I need to reserve anything there?
********We did not see Doge's Palace because we knew we were going to Versailles later in the trip......we did not have reservations for St. Mark's but the line moved fairly quickly (they keep the line moving quickly inside).....We were unable to do a gondola ride because it was rainy pretty much both days we were there. I think that would be a fun thing for the 4 of you to do.

-June 22nd-25th Rome- I know I need to reserve the Vatican/ Borghese Gallery, planning on getting the Roma Pass to cover the colosseum , forum etc.
********sounds you have this one covered.

-June 26th-27th Cinque Terre- lots of hiking and sightseeing
********you can purchase your "park pass" on your way to the trail. When we were there earlier this month only the Monterossa to Vernazza trail was open.....the park pass was 6 euro, I believe. You start on the hike in the old town side of Monterossa and the booth to purchase the park pass is a little bit further on the trail. We actually got ours ahead of time at the train station in Monterossa which is a good idea so you can purchase a combo ticket "hiking/train" (this was 12 euro?). We hiked from Monterossa to Vernazza then took the train to Corneglia then to Manarola then to Riomaggiore. We spent a decent amount of time in Riomaggiore then took the ferry back........the ferry stops at the other villages but not Corneglia (since it's up on the hilltop). The ferry ride was a separate fee and may have been 20 euro (gosh, all the $$ is running together in my brain)! The ferry was a great way to see the villages with the exception of Vernazza....the only way to really see that beautiful place is on the trail! Also, the ferry won't run if the sea is choppy......and you'll see why if you choose to do this :)

-June 28th- 30th Gimmelwald- more hiking and hopefully tubing on top of the world!
*********sounds like fun!

**********we did buy the Paris Museum pass ahead of time and I had it sent to me before our trip.....you do not need to do this unless you want to pay for it ahead of time. You can easily purchase the Pass at any of the museums (do so at a lesser museum though.....like the Orangerie so you don't have to wait too long in line to get the pass. Regarding the Eiffel Tower, I know folks say they have had luck going up without reservations but i would buy them ahead of time. You are there in full summer time and I expect it to be busier than it was for us in early May. You can easily purchase tickets (if they are still available) from the official website as listed in the RS book and print it out at home.....then you go to the leg of the tower that has the green flagged line to wait for your reservation time. They were running very close to schedule when we went.....warning....it gets very crowded up top! We would have liked to go at dusk but our reservations were for 4:30 pm. It was fun but not sure it's something we have to do again.

Will you be seeing Florence on this trip? It sounds like you are hitting many of the places we visited on our BOE 21 day tour. Feel free to pm me if need be!

For the reservations you will need with the Roma Pass at the Galleria Borghese the only way you can get them is to telephone - during Italian business hours - which means you will need to be pretty organized that day. They are only offered at 2 hour intervals, and when they are gone they're gone. You need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the reservation time or you can (likely) lose them.

My husband & I went to the Anne Frank house a few years ago and avoided the lines thanks to his forethought of pre-purchasing the tickets before leaving home. We too are planning a trip with our 3 college aged daughters whom all have this at the top of their lists however all the pre-buy tickets are sold out for most of June & July. After seeing the enormous lines on our last visit we have declined to return there with our girls. Hopefully you will have already got your tickets; if not, good luck waiting in line.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Unfortunately, I did not pre-book. I was so focused on getting hotel and train reservation that I missed this part. I was hoping I still had time, but I see that the popular sites are out.
Concerning the Anne Frank Museum, I'm going to buy the Museumkaart Pass and since we're staying close by the museum either go really early in the morning or late at night. We'll see how it goes.
Another lesson learned!
