how to make reservation of the train if you have Euro railpass?

For example, I found a TVG train from Paris to Switzerland in the early morning. It shows Reservation required online. I have had EuroRail pass, should I still make reservation for this train earlier, how earlier it should be, a few days ahead? This is the 1st time I try to travel in Europe, I really have no idea about all of them, who can give me suggestion and let me know how to do with it?

The easiest way would be to call the company that sold you the Eurail pass (RailEurope?) and they will make the reservation for you. If it is too early to make the reservation, they can set it up in their system so the reservation will be made as soon as that date is open.

You paid a tremendous amount of money for a pass (there are much cheaper ways to travel). Get the service you paid for by letting RailEurope figure this out for you. That's why people buy these passes, for convenience, right?

Hi,

In Germany I buy the seat reservation when I am in the country since I have the Pass to be used in Germany. It may seem last minute but for the ICE reservations used along with the Pass, a seat reservation in 2nd class is always available.

How do so many people feel comfortable buying these passes without understanding how the work?

Since you have made that decision and nobody has directly answered your question here, I'll have a go.

If you are traveling on a TGV train (redundant name - the "train" is superfluous because that is what the T in TGV means, but still, a TGV train) all seats are reserved while the train is in France. If you had purchased a normal point to point ticket the reservation would have just been part of the ticket, and if you were some time before travel the ticket might have been quite inexpensive. However if you have a Eurail pass (not a Eurorail - the Euro is the currency (money) used in several counties in the EU) not only do you have to buy an expensive reservation but those pass-holder reservations are quota controlled. There are even some international TGVs where the pass is not accepted. So it is very important that as soon as you are absolutely positive of which TGV you want you should buy the reservation immediately or risk having to either change to a different train or pay for a full fare ticket on the train you want.

As suggested above, it is unfortunate that the pass which is advertised as making life easier and less complicated, when dealing with French trains, does the opposite; and you have to pay a pretty penny.

As for who can sell you the reservations, whoever it was that sold you the pass should be your first port-of-call. Be aware that if it is Rail Europe they also add a shipping charge.

If there are any pass-holder reservations remaining for your train just before travel you can buy them at any SNCF Boutique in Paris or around France.

I hope that helps....

A reservation is required on direct TGVs from Paris to Switzerland and is one of the most expensive. I don't recommend calling Rail Europe unless you really need to because phone service costs extra. It should be easy enough to book online at https://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm. The second class reservations are cheaper and you can still choose them with a first-class pass if you wish. A few days ahead is also not recommended. If you are buying a pass, you can book this reservation at the same time.

The most typical reservation is from Paris to Basel or wherever you make the first train connection on your route. Connecting trains within Switzerland don't need reservations. It's also cheaper to reserve Paris to Strasbourg, instead, if you don't mind making an extra change of train. See more info at https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/france-rail-passes and similar detail on the pages for each country you plan to travel through.

I see that I gave you the above France link in your last thread, a few days ago. Have you actually bought a pass? Have you modified any of your trip plan from that last enquiry? I was really expecting you to make some itinerary changes (cutting destinations and/or substituting flights) that would leave you with only a couple of train rides.

Thank you for all of reply. Yes, Laura, I have purchased Rail Europe 3 countries pass. Now I just making detailed route to see how much need to spend for the reservation. It is so expensive. I also found if you purchased rail pass from Eurail.com, at least you can save 50 bucks to compare Rail Europe. But I have bought from RailEurope.com, I wish my rail pass can bring more benefits when visit more places, who knows?

FYI, I'd be surprised if there is a $50 price difference between the web sites, although if you were looking at Eurail.com in euros and making your own conversion, you might get that impression, or if you book by phone then it costs more. For example, for 5 days, 1st class for a single adult, in France-Spain-Italy, RailEurope.com currently charges $461 vs. Eurail.com charges $462. For a youth 2nd-class version, it's $302 vs. $304.

I recommend getting onto those seat reservations soon, if the trip is within the next two months. Most can be booked about 4 months ahead, though maybe not the routes within Spain.

I try to figure out my detailed trains and route. Though I have checked time by time about pass police, I still feel confused about overnight train. I have 5 days select 3 country pass, It said from midnight to midnight 24 hours be 1 day, that means I have 120 hours for train travel and allow you take unlimited numbers train whatever what kind of train, for overnight train will be counted for 1 day ticket from 7pm-----4am must non change other trains and non stop . If you take overnight train, if the service require you change in trains before 4am, that overnight ticket will be counted for two days ticket. did someone took overnight train before? is it like this? I currently plan to take overnight train from Barcelona to Paris. It start from 6:35pm, need to change another same number high speed train at 10:50pm, then directly get to Paris, this is before 4am, I wonder will my this overnight ticket be count to 2 days? I try to use 2 times overnight travel in my this trip because it only require to pay reservation, not hotel. From Barcelona -Paris-Switzerland then Madrid, the first 3 places, each one I plan to stay there for average 2 nights hotel, 2 times overnight train, could some one give me some of advice about how to plan the overnight travel and saving money?
