Getting from Ireland to Scotland via ferry boat

Hello! My husband, 3 young children and I are planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland. We will be visiting Ireland first and will have a rental car. We plan to take a ferry from Northern Ireland across to Scotland. My questions are as follows: What is the best course of action in regards to the rental car? Return in Ireland and pick up a new one in Scotland? Will the ferry take the car across & if so, is this very costly? We will be staying in Portrush, Ireland, heading to Isle of Skye, Scotland, so it appears the best/only ferry route will be to leave from Larne and arrive in Cairnryan- is this accurate? Any suggestions as to the best route to take and places to stop along the way to Isle of Skye? (Glasgow, etc.?) Many thanks for suggestions and advice!!

Check if you allowed to take rental cars on a ferry. It isn't allowed in many places such as Greece.

Given the location of the ferry, you are probably better dropping the car off in Ireland, flying to Glasgow and getting another car there.

The only ferry routes are Larne/Belfast to Cairnryan.

You may find it easier to take the car if it is hired from Northern Ireland, cars hired in the Republic of Ireland will most likely accrue hefty drop off charges, even by being dropped of in somewhere right on the border. If you are flying into Dublin, you will be getting a Republic of Ireland car, so best to go back down to Dublin to drop, then fly.
