Train from Chester to Rhosneigr, Anglesey, North Wales

In 2019 I know that a train went from Chester, England to Holyhead on Anglesey )and return I assume.) I want to take the train from Vhester, England to Rhosneigr, Anglesey then return to Rhyl ( and to Ruthin by bus as no train) four days later. Could anyone advise me on the train company ( line) and time schedules ?

2 train companies operate along the north Wales Coast. Avanti run express trains from London to Holyhead and these do not stop at Rhosneigr. Transport for Wales is the company that does have direct trains from Chester to Rhosneigr but you need to make sure the guard knows that you wish to alight at the small village so that the driver can be informed to stop. Hold arm out to stop train when returning east.

If you buy Advance tickets, you are locked in to that particular train with no refunds. These advance fares can be cheaper for one way journeys - such as north Wales to Cardiff or Cardiff to London. Return tickets allow some flexibility with some being dearer if at peak times - such as people going to work. Try a dummy journey on the sites below and you will see the schedules & fares. Should be easy peasy.

https://tfw.wales is the train company website. On some journeys, it may be cheaper to split the ticket at a place where the train stops - even though you don’t get off the train. The Transport for Wales site does not tell you this. The following site does tell you if splits work out cheaper but charges a commission on the amount saved.https://www.traintickets.com/?/

The following site should be able to tell you the bus services in Wales:>https://www.traveline.cymru

Or you check your fares on the Scotrail website as they will now tell you if a split fare is cheaper and actually sell you the split ticket- without charging you the commission.

However, on a simple journey like this, which has Advance train specific fares that is very unlikely. Transport for Wales Advance fares are even available on the day of travel- it is now 0720, they are still available on the 0959 today- which is the next train as the 0721 is just leaving.

From Rhosneigr there are only 3 buses a day each way on #25 run by Gwnfyor coaches to either Holyhead or Aberffaw connecting at Aberffraw with the #42 to Bangor run by O R Jones-
So you want the 0952 to Aberffraw, arrive 1014, depart 1044, Bangor arrive 1140.

Then Arriva Wales service 5/5C/5D to Llandudno, every 15 to 20 minutes, taking 1 hour 15 minutes, then Arriva Wales 12/12X which runs every 12 minutes and takes 90 minutes for the journey. So end to end this is a roughly 5 hour, or most of the day journey.

For Ruthin Arriva Wales #51/51B to Denbigh every 30 minutes- journey 1 hour, then the X51 every hour taking 30 minutes.

From Ruthin to Chester the hourly Traws Cymru T8 taking 1 hour, run by M and H coaches.

Ticketing wise use the 1Bws ticket for £7 per day- https://traws.cymru/en/use-1bws-ticket-north-wales
