Transport for Wales is introducing 6 new special Cycle Trains on the Mid-Wales train line between Swansea and Shrewsbury.
The service on that line used to be provided by a train of only one car, a Class 153, which only had room for 2 cycles and it could easily fill up in peak season. TfW have stripped out some of the seats in 6 of these carriages and replaced them with secure areas for bicycles, tandems and e-bikes, with room for 10. They are coupled to a standard 153 so toilet facilities are available and more seating, plus room for 2 more bikes, making 12 bike spaces per train,
We have walkers on this forum, and cyclists and lovers of Wales - they should all be delighted.
The article, in a trade paper, is at https://railuk.com/rolling-stock/first-cycle-train-enters-service-on-the-heart-of-wales-line/ with the full story and excellent interior and exterior photos.
The first train is now in service with the rest coming before summer.
