Wondering how to get to Aberfan from Cardiff via public transportation. I see that there are trains from Cardiff to Merthyr Vale. It doesn’t look that far to walk from Merthyr Vale to Aberfan according to the map. I can’t tell from the map if it is safe to walk. Are there footpaths, sidewalks?
I haven’t been, so can’t speak to the safety issue, but the distance from the train station, depending on where exactly you’re going, is just under a mile. Based on Google maps satellite view, it appears it’s mostly sidewalks through primarily a residential area along a main street.
Looks like you use the train to Merthyr Vale and then walk. If you are heading for the cemetery where all the people were buried following the disaster, I think the walking route would be shortest by going from the station to Crescent Street and then crossing the footbridge and following the path northwards on the west bank of the river.
