Prehistoric Sites near Conwy

Hi friends,

You have helped so much in planning my trip. I am looking for a prehistoric stone circle or burial mound or something like that that I can reach via public transportation from Conwy. Or a really cool hike to do after Bodnant Gardens. I have all the guide books and watched all the videos, but I would to know people's favorites.

I can’t think of any that are easily accessible in the Conwy area but you may like to consider taking the bus back from Bodnant to Llandudno and then climbing or taking the tramway up the Great Orme to see the copper mines.

A number of pre-historic sites are found on Anglesey but they are not easy to reach without a car.

You may like to consider taking the number 5 bus from Conwy westbound to Abergwyngregyn and then hiking up the valley to see Aber Falls. See > https://ohwhataknight.co.uk/blog/aber-falls-hike-guide

There's a burial chamber not far above lovely Rowen youth hostel.
If you fancy a bit more of a hike not to much further is

Rowen hostel is a former farmhouse with great views over the valley , the last 1/4 mile is comically steep

Looking at OS 1:50,000 sheet 115 if you start from Rowen and do a 6 to 7 mile walk to Llanfairfechan (rail and bus to Conwy) , apart from Caer Bach 9 different prehistoric sites (Settlements, Standing Stones, Mounds or Cairns) are on that route.

Also on the North Wales walk from Penmaenmawr (buses and trains) - about 5 miles- there are 7 different sites- stone circles, cairns, tumuli and a settlement.

Also get off the frequent coastal bus at Abergwyngregyn and head up the valley road to Bont Newydd and Nant (both common Welsh place names) there are a whole cluster of various sites up there- which actually link in with the Rowen to Llanfairfechan route.

So that OS sheet is going to be a vital friend to you- https://osmaps.com/

For anyone with a car there is a huge amount of prehistoric sites in that area, but more than enough there to be going on with.

How you’d get to them I don’t know, but there are a number of burial chambers and standing stones on Anglesey. For example, Bodowyr, Trefignath, Lligwy, and Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chambers, and Penrhos Feiw and Bryn Gwyn Standing Stones. There are others. We had a rental car.
