Hello
Just wondering if it is possible to plan an overnight train trip to Cardiff or is it a little too far. Thank you!
It's only two hours on the train from London Paddington to Cardiff, so it's possible as a day trip and certainly a very doable overnight break.
Do you want it to be an overnight? It looks like it's only a 3 hour train trip with hourly trains leaving from Paddington Station. This is according to Rome2Rio website.
It's a very short 2-hr train ride to Cardiff Central station, and Cardiff Castle is a short walk down the High Street from the station. Easily doable as a day trip. An overnight means you could see more and get outside of Cardiff if desired.
Rome2rio is wrong. It normally is a 2 hour train journey - if it is any longer, it would be because the train is taking a detour due to engineering work. That would be most likely on a Sunday & maybe a Saturday. In the first few days of June, the World’s most important soccer match takes place in Cardiff - avoid at this time.
Train fares/schedules here:> www.nationalrail.co.uk (It is cheaper if you pre book in advance specific trains). If paying on the day, you may be able to reduce the price by purchasing tickets for 3 legs of the journey = PAD > DIDcot; DID > SWIndon and SWIndon > Cardiff - as returns. Click DETAILS to make sure the train stops at Didcot - even though you don’t get off. They all stop at Swindon. Compare that with purchasing a through ticket. You may also find that paying on the day is cheaper by just splitting the tickets at Swindon.
If your desire is to visit beautiful Wales, Cardiff should not be the first place on your list. Besides, London is overloaded with plenty of nice and interesting places much closer by.
