My husband and I will be in North Wales in July for 3 days and would like to stay away from crowds on the coast in a small town that is large enough to have a couple of pubs/eating establishments and b&bs. We will have a car and would like a somewhat central town from which we can take day trips. Not a fan of touristy places. Thanks for any advice you can provide.
we spent a couple of days,(june) in criccieth, a small coastal town, just as you describe, with a castle, we were there searching family history and doing day trips to the slate mines etc. the nearby town of porthmadog was on our list as well. we very much enjoyed our time there. we drove up to anglesey and beaumaris on one day. driving around was not a problem. we stayed in a very nice B&B right on the coast and could walk to the local pub etc for meals.
I am sure you will find plenty of options in the area.
hope this helps
I would second Criccieth as a good choice. It was several years ago that I stayed there, but really enjoyed it.
