We will be taking 3 trips by rail in Wales May-June 2024. Questions:
Does it make sense to buy a rail pass?
Can we buy senior pass fares, or is that only for UK citizens?
How soon should we book the 3 rail trips for travel end of May/early June 2024?
Thanks in advance!
It depends where the rail trps are to and from. But generally yes the pass is worth it.
Need to check the specifics for your trips.
You would be better off buying a Two Together railcard for £30,, rather than two Senior Railcards at £30 each. The limitation is that 2T can only be used after 9.30am.
Yes senior and 2T railcards are available to anyone.
Tickets are available up to 8 weeks ahead in Wales, so should be available for your dates now.
The National rail pass also has 34% railcard reductions.
There is also the Explore Wales pass https://tfw.wales/ways-to-travel/rail/ticket-types/rovers-and-rangers/explore-wales. I am not sure if is worth it or not. I am still running the numbers.
Don't forget when doing the maths that the Explore Wales ticket also includes the majority of local bus services for the validity period.
I suggest that you also read some of the information about Wales posted in this thread:> https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/i-extended-my-trip
