Cardigan or St. Davids for 2 Nights

My wife and I are planning to visit Wales in October 2025. We have traveled extensively in the UK, but never Wales. We will have a car.

The first part of the week we will be based in Conwy. We will have 2 nights (arriving on Tuesday afternoon and leaving by mid-day on Thursday) somewhere in the southern / southwest area of Wales. We enjoy a mix of charming towns and access to hikes and coastline.

Thoughts on Cardigan or perhaps St. Davids as a good home base for a couple of nights in this part of Wales? Any insights appreciated.

Both are nice towns (St David’s technically a city but it’s very un urban). St David’s is a lot smaller than Cardigan so it has fewer options for eating out, shopping and everything else. However, it’s therefore more old fashioned and prettier. It also has the Cathedral which is worth a visit. There are lovely walks you can do right from the town. Between the two towns you’ll pass through Newport which is a very cute and very small town with some good food options. It’s a nice play to stay for a few days if you want a different option to throw into the mix.

Can’t speak to Cardigan, but we enjoyed St. Davids. The cathedral and bishop’s palace were good for about 2 hours. We also walked a couple segments of the coastal path near town. Otherwise, there’s very little to the town.

Prior to it, we visited Pembroke Castle and the Carew Cross. After St. Davids we visited Pentre Ifan burial chamber, and the weeping yew in Nevern before continuing on to Dyfi furnace and Aberystwyth.
