Cardiff to Crewe Railway Line

Anyone travelling from South Wales to North Wales by train (including Bath to Conwy passengers)- the line has been closed all day due to a vandalism incident south of Craven Arms.

There is currently a DO NOT TRAVEL notice on the line, with no trains Hereford to Shrewsbury, and apparently no alternative road transport.

Use alternative services via Birmingham.

Apparently an obstruction was placed on the track. That was hit by an engine, which had it's fuel tank ripped off.

Among the trains cancelled was a steam excursion from Hereford to the Lake District, with seats at several hundred £ each.

My word! That is an awful thing to have done. Hope there were no injuries.

As far as seems to be known no-one was injured- it appears to have been a freight train.

Craven Arms is as quiet a place as you could expect to find. What is concerning is that about 13 months ago there was another incident, very close by, of an obstruction being placed on the track. That time it was a passenger train involved, no injuries then either but a fire broke out on the train involved and 50 people had to be evacuated from the stricken train.

Presumably the British Transport Police will make a link this time.

For Cumbria it was to have been the first day since 1968 that two steam trains had travelled my line on the same day- the first ran very early due to the rail strike (so many people missed seeing it), then the second (the Hereford train mentioned above) was cancelled.
