We will be visitingCardiff for only one day (October 2nd or 3rd). I have been trying to buy tickets for Cardiff castle but the sales calendar ends at September 30th. Is the castle open after this date, the website says it is. But I’m wondering why I can’t buy tickets, is too early?

Presumably it is too soon- over 2 months ahead of time.
I'd be very surprised if you NEED to pre-book, especially in October. Like many places, that is almost certainly now a convenience- a hangover from Covid.
It wouldn't even cross my mind to pre-book such a site.

The Castle is definitely open, only shutting on 25th and 26th December and also 1st January. A similar question was asked on Trip Advisor a year ago and the answer was you didn't need to book and could buy on the day... You can also wander round the 'Public Square' inside the castle free of charge.
