car rental in Wales for a 74 year old

Is it possible for a 74 year old to rent a car in Wales and if so, would the rate be exorbitant?

Still deciding between using public transit for 2 weeks or renting a car for part or all of the journey. We will be covering the coastal areas south to north in September.

I would hate to spend far longer in transit than necessary for the distances we would cover especially on day trips. We would probably spent about 4-5 days in the south and am most interested in the SW coast of the south, and the 4 major castles in the north.

Thanks!

A quick search indicates there should be no issues renting a vehicle in Wales at your age. However, different companies have different rules, so check a few rental companies. The cost shouldn’t change because of age.

I feel a rental car is the way to go for getting around Wales. While some places are well connected by public transportation, others are not. I hate wasting any significant amount of time waiting for a train or bus, hence, a rental car. It affords a lot of flexibility for visiting spur of the moment locations like Dyfi Furnace or Pentre Ifan burial chamber.

On our last trip to Wales we based ourselves out of Caernarfon for a few nights. On one day we drove around Anglesey starting at Beumaris castle, then going to the town with the long name (Llanfair…gogoch), South Stack lighthouse, Penrhos Feiw standing stones, Llynon windmill, and Lligwy Burial chamber. It would probably have been impossible to visit those sites on the same day using public transportation, or if it could be done at all.

that's my dilemma! wasted time versus cost of a vehicle and the stress associated with both options. lol
