B&Bs for Rhos-on-Sea or Colwyn Bay, and Pwllheli or Abersoch

I’m spending a couple of weeks on beaches in North Wales . I’ve been twice before and stayed in Llandudno and Conwy, looking for elsewhere to stay this time. As I’ve already booked one for Anglesey I’m looking for the north shore within easy reach of Conwy by bus or train ( will not have a car). I specifically want Rhos on Sea or Colwyn Bay .Therefore I also need my accommodation closer to the beach . I prefer smaller, homely family run places that are 4-5 star.

I ‘ll also be going to the Llyn peninsula a week later . I understand that near Abersoch is expensive even in October .
If you have other suggestions I welcome them as well .

We stayed in Caernarfon at Victoria House the couple times we were in that area. It used to be a B&B but no longer has breakfast; just a room.

If you get to Rhos-on-Sea, the Holy Well and Chapel of St Trillo are worth a short visit. The chapel only has 6 seats and is on the beach side of the road.

We had a rental car on our trip.

If Conwy is your priority then Pwllhelli or Abersoch by public transport are pretty inconvenient.
Rhos, Colwyn Bay or any other of the resorts as far East as Rhyl would suit you.
Probably your best choice for its range of guest houses would be Llandudno, round the corner from Conwy. A centre for buses and trains in all directions in North Wales.

On the north coast, I suggest you choose Llandudno - even though the beach is pebbles. It is near to Conwy and has good transport links. Suggest you might like to visit Bodnant Gardens whilst in Llandudno or Conwy. Avoid Rhyl (downmarket).

Abersoch is nice but transport is limited. Pwlllheli is on the railway but I was not impressed with the town when I visited about 6 years ago. An excellent transport hub in this area is Porthmadog. The town is OK but nothing to rave about. You also have Portmerion Italian style village a short distance away. If deciding on Porthmadog - consider staying at the Premier Inn which is right by the narrow gauge steam railway station - unless you can find accommodation in the 4-5 star range.

If going to Porthmadog from Anglesey - you need to get to Caernarfon (castle) and take a bus or take the scenic Welsh Highland Railway through the Snowdonia National Park. From Porthmadog, you could take a normal train on the scenic Cambrian line via Barmouth to Shrewsbury (worth a look around) and change for one going down to Cardiff.

A place that cropped up a few months ago, in Conwy itself, on another enquiry, is Gwynfryn B and B with it's attached Hidden Chapel restaurant.

It sounds like the sort of place you are looking for. Llandudno does have sandy beaches, especially the West Beach. You only have to look at Satellite views to confirm that. See also the town's website- https://www.visitconwy.org.uk/things-to-do/llandudno-west-shore-beach-p297021

Conwy has it's own railway station, with regular direct services from Holyhead, and Conwy is on the main coastal bus route.

Thanks for your comments especially James about travel to and from the Llyn peninsula and other information!

I’ve since edited my post to be more specific.

I’ve stayed at both Llandudno and Conwy in previous trips .
The Gwynfryn B&B that one comment posted about was the one that I stayed at in Conwy several
years ago. It was very highly rated on Trip Advisor but of the four B&Bs that I stayed in that trip it was my least favourite! The hosts were spread thin , often in the chapel and they were a bit eccentric.and stressed. My breakfast in the chapel was not great. Also my room with the bathroom across the hall which I hadn’t known prior to arrival was i convenient and the room very small !

I've just been looking on Visit Conwy (the local tourism website as Conwy is a district as well as the town) and have found the Bryn Woodlands in Colwyn Bay.

On a sample date in late October it is £8 cheaper booked direct than through Booking.com due to commission, and pay on arrival. Very reasonably priced for the apparent quality. Certainly family run and 4*, locally sourced food.

5* on TA with barely a bad review, so appears to tick every box.

As for Pwllhelii/Abersoch I'm not finding much inspiration. This list on line appears to be well out of date- https://www.pwllheli.org.uk/stay.html

A bit of investigation shows that The Goslings has been demolished and the Somerdale has closed for good.

Nor is booking.com providing much inspiration apart from a couple of hotels, which would be a bit of a compromise for you- the Victoria on the Traeth (beach) at Pwllhelli and the Castle in the centre of town.

The issue is that it is more self catering and caravan site land. Looking at Google Maps produces the Hafod Luxury B and B at Abersoch- https://hafodabersoch.co.uk/

No obvious star rating and just 10 reviews (all 5 star) on Trip Advisor. That may be a bit of a leap of faith for you.

This is the only bus service to Abersoch- https://bustimes.org/services/18-pwllheli-pwllheli-via-abersoch?date=2024-09-09

No evening service, but otherwise fairly reasonable, and there is at least a basic Sunday service.

Such thin pickings possibly shows why many, myself included, would more think of staying in Porthmadog than further down the peninsula. High prices is probably a reflection of that scarcity.
