Attingham Park or Powis Castle?

We're going to have most of one afternoon and the entire next morning in Shrewsbury, Wales. In addition to the Abbey and St. Mary's church, should we visit Powis Castle or Attingham Park?

Not been to Attingham Park but have been to Powis Castle. Powis Castle is an absolutely top grade National Trust property & well worth a visit. Check visiting times carefully.

Hello Brenda,

I am a new member to RS Travel Forum and will be traveling via train from Shrewsbury to Welshpool to visit Powis Castle.
Once there, I will be availing local transportation; probably bus. Another contributor suggested purchasing fare for a stop or two past Welshpool and just exiting at your destination. Sometimes longer journeys are less expensive.

According to National Rail website the journey is less than 30 minutes (one way). I will be purchasing a "Two Together" travel card and that discount will allow a fare of L8.20 for two adults. I am choosing the open return option.

If you have extended time and head to Caerphilly Castle (near Cardiff), there is an event to meet the dragon!

I don't think that a bus is available between Welshpool station & Powis Castle - so you may have to walk it. Walk from the station through the main street & turn left - the locals will point you in the right direction. The National Trust website says it is just over 1 mile.
If you see a taxi at the station, you might wish to use that and then just walk back on your return. (The taxi might take a longer route to the Castle so get staff at Castle to point you down the shortest route exit drive if on foot).

Look at Google Earth to see the route.

Powis Castle is definitely worth seeing--gardens are nice too. If you are heading to Shrewbury you might try to see Stokesay Castle in that area.
