20 mph urban speed limit in Wales

From today the default urban speed limit in Wales (unless signposted otherwise) is reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

The definition of an urban area is where lamp posts are no more than 200 yards (183 metres) apart.

If in doubt "twenties plenty".

I don’t think this is going to help Wales to attract more visitors.

I get that in urban areas it can increase road safety but in Wales the road network is such that you often have to drive through many villages to get anywhere. It’s already slow going and this is going to make driving more frustrating.

I agree Helen. I have only been done once for speeding and that was in the village of St. Arvans when the limit was 30 mph! Got fined £90 and had to go on one those speed awareness course for a whole day. I now have to drive for miles at 20 mph and the engine is spinning faster and using more fuel and therefore creating more pollution.

At least the Welsh Government are taking action to improve rail travel in Wales - both long distance and the SE Wales Metro. I see you live in Bristol and the efforts to improve rail travel in your area are pretty poor. They plan to open the Henbury branch to passenger trains - but, it will only be 1 train per hour. Same goes for the Portishead line - when they eventually get on with it. The trains on the Cardiff > Bristol > Bath > Southampton > Portsmouth route are often only 3 or even 2 coaches often with air conditioning out of action and rammed. At least things are now better on the Cardiff > Bristol trains that go to Taunton & the SW as they are using 5 car Class 800’s on many services.

The BBC Politics Wales programme has just been discussing the 20mph speed limit with Lee Waters = the Deputy Minister for Climate Change (really the Transport Minister). Those interested can see it here:>https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000dk1n

The speed limit in my suburban town, 25-miles from NY City, is 25 MPH unless otherwise posted. Of course, if your soon-to-be Olympic swimmer has been warned by the coach not to be late for practice again, you are authorized to drive your Chevy Suburban at 45 MPH, while you text your personal trainer to change your own appointment again, And Stop signs are only for losers.

Spain did something similar a couple years ago. It’s difficult to stay at that speed. It is what it is.

The one upside is that it will likely annoy many DVLA staff and that can only ever be a good thing.
