I am flying from Sofia to Paris and when I checked in online it said non EU citizens need to have their documents checked and boarding pass stamped at the check in counter. I was wondering if anyone had experience flying wizzair from non Schengen to Schengen and if this was true? I know sometimes what’s online isn’t up to date and I would love to avoid the busy check in counter if possible. So would appreciate any personal experience stories. Thanks so much!
Not Wizz specifically, buy there have random occurrences of it needing to happen, sometimes it's happened at the gate counter.
It's a low cost airline, if they say you have to do something, do it. Otherwise you might be denied boarding, or have to pay a €100 fee. Low cost airlines are not known for being flexible.
I assume the counter is where they check that you have the right to travel to Schengen area.
I have had to do this on a couple of occasions. Not on Wizzair but on Ryan Air. At least for Ryan Air, they mean a document check, where they looked at my passport and then made a notation on my boarding pass. I first encountered this at the Barcelona airport a few years ago. The document check area was barely marked. There were long baggage check lines and check in lines. Finally, at the window where you can walk up and buy a ticket onsite, there was a small piece of paper taped in the window that said "Document check", handwritten on a piece of paper. It took me forever to find it.
I was in the Sofia airport this summer - flying in, so no document check for me. I will say that it seemed like a smaller airport (of course, I had just come from Heathrow), so maybe it will be simpler.
Wizz says go to the check in desk so I would start there.
Here's a forum discussion about document checks in general: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/ryanair-visa-document-check-desk
