Vueling Denying refund for flight cancelled due to Covid 19

Hello Team,
Me and my friends had booked a flight with Vueling Airlines for traveling between Porto to Barcelona on the 9th April 2020. However they cancelled the flight and are now denying the refund. We are from India and we do not have any travel plans for the next few years. Can someone please help me as to how I can challenge Vueling and get the refund.

Reply from Vueling Airlines.,

That reply is talking about compenstion. Compensation is when they delay you and the EU rules mandate they pay you a compensation for the inconvenience.

You aren't asking for compensation are you? I would expect that you are asking for a refund - something different.

Thank you so much Edmonds and Nigel.

We do not need the compensation. All that we want is the refund of the flight tickets. I hope there is no issue with that.

There may be an issue with "cash" refund. From reading a bunch of prior postings and news release it appear that the EU is allowing or encouraging a voucher refund instead of a cash refund for cancelled trips. The goal is to reduce cash flow requirements that might drive a company into bankruptcy and then no one gets much of anything. At the moment you may have to take the voucher refund and the hope of converting to cash at a later date IF the airline is still flying.

It sounds like Vueling is confused over what you are asking. It would not hurt to ask again being as specific as possible that you want a refund of the cancelled flight, not EU 261 compensation.

Or, if that does not work and you are sure the airline is not going to refund you, then and only then, pursue a chargeback through your bank or whoever issued you the credit card you used to make the purchase for services not rendered for payment made.

My flight scheduled for May 18th from Barcelona to Seville was cancelled by Vueling and at first I was offered a voucher. Then I received an email saying I could request a refund . After I requested a refund I received an email stating I would get further instructions. After several days the instructions arrived via email and advised that a credit voucher was issued, but if I still wanted a refund I needed to contact Vueling by phone . I was successful in requesting my refund and received email confirmation my refund was being processed and could take up to 8 weeks to receive. Here are the phone numbers that were provided to call for the refund request.

Contact telephone numbers: From Spain +34931226046 - From UK +442039662584 - From Italy +390694809415 - From France +33184886487 - From USA +18453662253 - From other countries +34931222065 - Personalized service: mon-fri from 10 am to 8 pm (spanish time)

Thank you so much everyone. I have always requested for a refund. But maybe there was some confusion. I will try calling these numbers and see if I can get a refund in the best case or a voucher for now.

Does anyone know if you bought the tickets through Expedia (for Veuling flight Athens to Rome), whether a refund would be processed through Expedia or the airline?
Thanks in advance?
