My daughter and I will be arriving in London on May 4. We had planned to take the Picadilly line to Kings Cross. I've just read that there will be a 24 hour Underground strike on that day. I had thought we'd take a taxi instead but I found out that would cost close to 300 pounds. I'm wondering if taking a bus is a good option. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.
Assuming the strike is not cancelled, Elizabeth Line to Farringdon then Thameslink trains (a main line company) to Kings Cross).
Or Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line then red London Bus #205 to Kings Cross, but the buses are likely to be very busy if the strike happens.
£300 for a taxi is something like 3x the correct fare.
OR Elizabeth Line to Paddington. Then the 205 bus to Kings Cross.
Do you actually need to go to Kings Cross or is your final destination somewhere else in London?
We are taking the train from Kings Cross to Edinburgh.
Flying up to Edinburgh from Heathrow would avoid any London-centric problems.
Why not fly to Edinburgh? Make more sense.
For ease of travel......Elizabeth Line to Paddington then a taxi to Kings Cross. A taxi from Paddington to Kings Cross shouldn't cost more than 15-20 GBP.
Less schlepping luggage this way.
Thanks, everyone who replied. You gave me some good options to consider.
Hi ginger, where did you see the info on the strike?
Strike info is in the media and on the TFL web site; https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/strikes
Thank you Simon!
Donna, I had been reading that there have been a lot of transportation strikes so I thought I'd better check to see if there might be one when we were in London. I googled "underground strikes in May 2024" and wouldn't you know, the only one currently showing for May is the day we get to London!
There is also a thread on here which is being kept up to date- https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/new-london-underground-strikes-8-april-and-4-may-2024
