I saw this on Wikipedia is this famous scam at the airport in Thailand still happening in recent years where some police will accuse you falsely of stealing items when you are walking in the airport in Bangkok/etc.

My S.O. is Thai. She is there today. I asked her and she laughed at me. So I did some digging. There is a very good chance that the people in question were actually shoplifting and got caught. The police apparently did offer to let them go free in exchange for a bribe. No guarantee that's 100% of what happened but appears to be most of it.
Dont shop lift and you are probably going to be okay.
