During my last trip to Sicily in October 2024, I discovered a common practice that I would label a scam.
Petrol stations, including well-known networks, display the gas price on large banners visible from a distance. This price is generally close to the observed average - all good so far.
However, when you pull in to refuel, a worker suddenly appears and offers to fuel your vehicle for you. You notice that the price at the pump is 20-30% higher than what was advertised on the banners!
When you ask about this discrepancy, they casually explain that the price on the banner is for self-service, which is often not possible since the workers are constantly patrolling the station in an intimidating manner and the self-service machines are frequently out of order.
My advice: only refuel at very large gas stations and consider checking their ratings in advance.
