Rental cars and gas stations

Rented a car in Frankfurt Germany. First agent upsold us and then when we declined we got the car we originally booked. Up sell price: $949.- Booked price: $549.- We get home and first they say there was $346. in damages and the they produce an invoice that they hadn’t sent us for $949. Also got gas in Fussen (no receipt) and the pump says it is charging 57 euros for the gas and 150.- euros. Manager says it is simply a hold but when we check the bank they had charged $323.02 on our debit card. Both difficult to resolve. Ongoing.

I wish you success in fighting the charges. I always take before and after pix of any rental car to protect myself. Who was the rental agency?

In regard to your fuel fees, I doubt that any car on the road today would hold $323.02 worth of fuel. A semi truck maybe…but not a car. Another reason to use credit cards vs. debit cards when making purchases at home or abroad. Credit cards offer more protection to the user.

So a first and only post is about a tourist scam.

Why didn’t OP get a gas receipt? Nor a copy of original rental car invoice?

Great advice about taking pics of rental cars when rented and returned. I do the same.

Would be interested in knowing from which company the car was rented from in Frankfurt.

I didn't get a receipt at the gas station because the machine didn't print one when I requested it and there was no one in the megastore (V-Markt, Fussen) who could help me. The rental car agency is Avis. We were really tired coming off our flight but looking back when he said that he would e-mail us the updated invoice we should have insisted on a hard copy. The 'damages' are difficult to deal with because when we dropped off the car it was in a garage with no attendant. I took 2 pictures of the car but more to prove we dropped it off at the right place than to demonstrate the condition of the car. Experience is a strict teacher.

What type of damages are they claiming? I use my cell phone camera for lots of pictures including the gas pump. One return in France claimed the car was "too dusty" and need to go through a car wash.
