One must have a ticket to enter the platforms in Spain. The AVE requires bags to be scanned (no where near airport level security). All due to the Atocha bombings. But neither is an impediment to boarding your train, unless you are racing to catch it at the last moment.

Making the platforms ticket-only should all but eliminate the train porter scam.

If they implement the same policy at other stations in Italy (especially Milano Centrale), that will also eliminate the teenagers that leave small cards on the seats prior to the train departure. It will be interesting to see how well this new system works.
