Hotel booking scams beware of hotelvalues.com and getaroom.com all linked to Priceline.com

My mother was charged $16,000 - yes, that is not a typo - for unknowingly booking through Getaroom.com and hotelvalues.com which are both official Priceline.com partners.

My mother called the Grand Hotel Majestic gia' Baglioni in Bologna. My mother speaks fluent Italian and knows Bologna well.

She thought she was speaking to the hotel directly, but the call had actually been transferred to the Priceline /GetaRoom /hotelvalues reservation agent. That agent acted as if she was from the hotel itself. After giving my mother a price on the phone, which she agreed to, they emailed her the confirmation. The agent had given my mother a price per night, but made it sound like it was the price for the entire stay. The confirmation email looked as if it was coming from the Grand Hotel Majestic gia' Baglioni in Bologna. When my mother looked at the confirmation email, it showed a total of $16,000.

Obviously my mother immediately called back to cancel the reservation. She called back within ten minutes. When she called back she was told the reservation had been cancelled. At no point during that conversation was she told that the reservation was NON-REFUNDABLE. Moroever, she now had no actual place to stay. Needless to say she was shocked when she saw that outrageous charge on her next American Express Bill.

As we got more involved in the topic, it became clear - through documented correspondence - that these scammers, have formal relationships with Priceline in Norwalk, CT. These scammers change their names but Priceline continues to work with them; GetaRoom was sued in 2020 in a class action lawsuit. https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/money/fees/getaroom-com-class-action-alleges-deceptive-hotel-booking-methods/

Hotelvalues.com seems to still be in business.

The Grand Hotel Majestic gia' Baglioni in Bologna should be ashamed too, for allowing these types of reservations to be made. They shirk any responsibility for what is going on and claim that they are powerless refund the charges since the reservations are made through a third party. Yet it is their hotel and their rooms being reserved. At what point are you responsible for what is going on in your house?

Surprisingly and shamefully, American Express has been no help either - the fact that they take bookings from these terrible sites reveals that they too are a big part of the problem. It is hard to imagine that Am Ex can't flag scammers that have been flagged many many times before.

This scam has been reported by many others on Rick Steve's - there was an April 2024 forum on the topic. This occurred in September 2024 and we are still fighting it - which is why I wanted to flag it here. The scammers are still scamming.

Everyone seems to have something to gain financially from these charges- except my 84 year-old mom.

Shameful the agent was so deceitful, but looking at the hotel site the per night cost runs from 410 to 8500 euro per night depending on what kind of room one selects.( random nights in June).

Is this the number she called --- tel: +39 051 225445 - [email protected] that transferred her to the 'priceline' agent? https://grandhotelmajestic.duetorrihotels.com/en?.

How many nights was she planning to stay?

Priceline.com is owned by Booking Holdings, of which Booking.com is a subsidiary.

There was another poster who posted a similar story involving booking.com and a London hotel, maybe on another forum. That one sounded like this one, except the booking was a mistake. And the customer was left high and dry by everyone and without any actual service despite paying shy of $10,000.

Just a note to me: if I ever accidentally make a huge (5 figure) non-refundable hotel reservation, I am going to report the card lost/stolen. There’s too much at stake to trust that the process will work.

You might want to get in touch with the advocacy folks at the Elliot Organization. They attempt to solve travel related problems. They may be able to help. Good luck!

The state Attorneys General offices in Connecticut and the state you live in would likely be most interested in
this case of consumer fraud. They usually have units that pursue the responsible parties.
Here in California, a purchase by credit card can always be reversed within 24 hours of the transaction regardless of it being categorized as “non-refundable” by the seller.
All the best to you and your mom in getting a satisfactory outcome in this matter.

Did you formally file a dispute of the charge with AmEx?

Thank you for all of the notes. We really appreciate it. We are now pursuing through the state AG. Am Ex has been terrible - the fact that they work with companies that are clearly "shape shifters" - such as hotelvalues.com - is shameful. And the fact that they did not provide a hold/fraud alert on the card is shameful. The Hotel Baglioni chain too allows these fraudulent sites to operate as them. We are pursuing all of these avenues. Please keep the advice coming!

It is also very interesting to learn how California deals with this issue - to allow a reversal within 24 hours no matter what. I am going to suggest that to our CT AG office!

Does anyone have advice regarding how to deal with the Hotel Baglioni in Bologna? Through recent documents they now seemed to have actually charged my mother the nights (even though she didn't stay there because she was told that she "successfully" cancelled the room). So not only did the Hotel Baglioni Bologna allow the charges to go through and continue to work with fraudsters, but they easily probably sold room again. Any advice would be welcome.

I have also been scammed by hotelvalues.com & AmEx who won't fight for me! The site looked exactly like it was the direct hotel. I booked my room, got the confirmation & saw that it was a 3rd party site & double the quoted rate! I immediately cancelled & they sent a cancel confirmation with a nonrefundable message. I called them immediately & they would not even let me talk to a manager. They just kept saying it is nonrefundable, I agreed to the terms online. I said, ok, then reinstate the reservation, they said they could not do that. They stole my money & would not rebook. I called in less than 5 minutes! Then I convinced them to work with the hotel & they sent me an email that the hotel would NOT help me (I don't believe that). Contacted AmEx to help me, they said they could not help, it was nonrefundable. They are scammers!!! Beware!! I seriously don't know how people can keep from being scammed these days. I am a very savy consumer & book online all the time. They make it look like the actual hotel site, it is out of control! I emailed the hotel directly. If that does not work, I am going to try small claims court to report them to the AG.

You need to always double check before buying.

I recently went to book a room at a site that looked right. But the price seemed high. I looked at the URL and somehow I had been redirected to a third party sight. Luckily, I caught it in time.

Caveat emptor.
