Hi, I booked a private excursion with a contractor in Norway. He asked me to call him on Whatsapp when we arrive. I checked the App Store and there are several options. Which one do I need to download? I have an Apple 11 phone and iPad. I keep the phone in airplane mode and prefer not to use it except for texts. Appreciate any advice. Thank you!
I just looked at the App store. Get the WhatsApp Messenger. I'm not sure how the WhatsApp Business works but Messenger is the one I've got and use with friends in Europe. It's a green square with a phone in a bubble icon.
We use the same one
Thank you 👍
I think you need wifi to use Whatsapp if you don't get a data plan. With wifi you can text and phone and video for free. Add him to your Whatsapp contacts before you leave. BTW just about everyone in Europe uses Whatsapp regularly, businesses print their Whatsapp number on their cards.
I agree with Chani to input his number in ahead of time. Are you traveling with others? If so, set up a group before you leave home so you can practice there as well, lol!!
There's no native app for Whatsapp on the iPad. There is an official version of Whatsapp for the iPhone. I think there's only one that is not "business"; you don't want that one as a customer.
And weirdly, you can only have Whatsapp on one device using your telephone number, so personally I would download it onto my phone, not the iPad.
Thanks for all your help! I loaded What’s App on my phone and put the guy in my contacts so hopefully I’ll be able to connect with him.
I can turn off cellular and leave the phone on wi-fi, right?
"I can turn off cellular and leave the phone on wi-fi, right?"
Yes, absolutely. Put it in airplane mode and it won't access your cellular plan but you can still access hotel/airport wifi.
Pam, thank you so much! Donna
Once you have Whatsapp on your phone you can download the app to your ipad and link it to the phone. Then you can use the app on your ipad (with wifi, of course).
At least that's what I do with my laptop and my desktop PCs.
A slight WhatsApp tangent. Pre-Facebook you could use WhatsApp without giving it access to your full contacts list. Now you can’t. Has anyone figured out how to use WhatsApp in iOS without granting access to contacts?
Unfortunately Chani, there is no app for WhatsApp for the iPad so if they want access to messages, they need to go on WhatsApp web through their browser. This doesn’t allow for calls though.
Trotter—try this:
Go to Settings—Privacy & Security—Contacts. Unselect WhatsApp.
One thing I do when I add a guide to my WhatsApp contacts is to ping him / her to make sure that everything is setup correctly. Nothing like fumbling around trying to find that person at the last minute.
Ed, great idea! I’ll do that 👍
Thanks Katheryne.
Just returned from our trip and wanted to report back. Whatsapp worked perfectly! Thanks to everyone for your help!
