Video from iPhone to computer

My iPhone 5c won't let me email a video longer than, say, 50 seconds. Now that I'm home from my trip, I have a video approximately 3 minutes long that I want to save in my home computer. I tried to email it to myself, but the iPhone says the file size is too big to email (even though a Gmail address supposedly has no file size restrictions).

I understand there are iPhone apps to increase the size of files you can email out of your iPhone. Is that the way to go? Or is there some other method?

My home computer is a PC, not a Mac (thus not on Apple software), if that makes a difference.

When I plug my iPhone into my laptop it asked me if it should download new pics and/or vids.

@Stephen, when I followed your link I found that it shows how to upload videos from an iPhone to Windows 8, but not Windows 7. I have Windows 7. For Windows 7 it only shows how to upload from a digital camera -- for which I already have a card reader.

@jkc, when I plug in my iPhone to my computer it only shows how much storage space is available on the phone. Oh! Now I figured it out. You have to tell your phone to "trust this computer" and then you have to right-click on the phone in the Computer menu. Mine didn't give me a choice of which photos & videos to import, so I had to import all of them, many of which are of no importance to me . . . but I was able to import the video I wanted. Yay!

Thanks, both of you!

I posted this question and link to a friend who when he checked the link your question had a few answers. I am not sure what the video showed as far as how to do what you wanted but I am posting the comment I received back from my friend. I am not sure if his suggestion at the end of his comment on how to save your files in the future may also be of some help.

When I went to that link it appears that they have answered that person’s question…..the key is to connect the iPhone to the computer directly with USB and then in iTunes you should be able to save any files (including videos) onto the computer whether it is PC or Mac. The only software that you should need is iTunes which can be installed on mac or pc.
Not sure what program on the PC would play the movie but pretty sure they can download Quicktime Player for free and that should play the movie. Long term solution is to save the move as a .mp4 file which is generic and can be played on any system.

This is the way I do it:
Plug the Iphone USB into your PC.
After a few seconds a message from Windows will pop-up asking you if you want to import pictures/videos on to your PC's hard drive. The photos and videos will be in the "My Picutres" area of your PC.

If for some reason that pop-up windows doesn't appear you can do it manually this way:
Open up a file window, select "my computer" or "this PC", under the "devices and drives" category you will see the Iphone listed. Double click the Iphone icon, double click "internal storage" then double click the DCIM folder, then you will see one or possibly more folders which contain all the pictures and video contained on your Iphone. Browse through the folders to find the video and simply do a Copy/Paste to move the video on to your hard drive.

@Michael Schneider, my phone didn't automatically give me the option.

But, I eventually found the crucial right-click on the computer screen Devices and Drives menu where the iPhone shows up. That enabled me to access the video on the phone and import to the Photos library in my computer. Problem solved!

Pop it up to Dropbox and grab it from there....

Glad you solved it.

Dropbox compresses video files. When you transfer it back to your PC it's never as good a quality as the original.

Glad to know that Dropbox compresses files. I have placed videos on Dropbox so that friends can get them without having to make them completely public through a cloud sharing platform.

I reiterate that what worked for me to get the video out of the phone was: 1. Physically plug the iPhone into the computer with the cord. 2. Go to Devices and Drivers in the computer, where the iPhone now shows up, and select the iPhone.

I use Dropbox all of the time to transfer video from my phone to the computer. Just download the app onto your phone, and install it on your computer. Then just "share" the video with Dropbox. When you log into your computer and look in your Dropbox folder, the video will be there.

Use iTunes, you can transfer videos from iPhone to computer. All you need do is download it to your computer and you will have full access to your phone's information and you need not worry about lengthy "WiFi" downloads (take my word for it, downloading gigabytes of information over a wireless network can take forever) because it is a direct "peer to peer" connection. You can be done with it all in 8-10 minutes without the need to download any other drivers or anything else.

Using Itunes just complicates the process a bit. Transferring photos/videos is already built into the windows operating system. All you gotta do is plug it into the USB jack and windows transfers the files automatically.

The resident computer expert in my office concurs with Nancy (above) in recommending Dropbox. I had not known there was a Dropbox app for the phone. Transferring via Dropbox seems to be a very useful and simple solution.

Dropbox has limitations. You only get 2 gb of free storage. That's not much for HD video files. 2GB is only about 20 minutes:( That's on top of the compression DropBox uses which lessens the picture quality. If you must use a cloud service, use Microsoft's OneDrive 15GB for files (including Video)+ another 15GB for photos, or Google Drive; 15gb. Both are functionally the same as DropBox.
