Viamichelin

I was investigating walking routes in Tuscany (Siena to Monteriggioni, specifically), and came across www.viamichelin.com. Pretty cool! It shows maps and directions for do-it-yourself travel (options for car, motorcycle, bicycle, and walking) anywhere in the world. For Siena to Monteriggioni, it gave directions for three possible walking routes, and also showed a thin and somewhat circuitous line - when I zoomed in, it turned out to be a portion of the Via Francigena, with lots of detail.

I've used ViaMichelin for years. I think Google Maps is a little more accurate, particularly for walking, but ViaMichelin has the cost of tolls and gas (you have to tell it the kind of car and the cost [€/liter] for gas), which is nice for comparing the cost of driving to the cost of public transportation.

ViaMichelin also shows alternate routes and lets you choose between quickest, shortest, most scenic, or route to avoid tolls. I have used it and recommended to others for years.
