Travel Wifi

Just came across this on the internet for inquiring techie minds.

Travel Wifi - Mobile Hotspot Rental, Unlimited Internet, 4G ...

http://travel-wifi.com/default.jsp
Mobile Hotspot Rental with unlimited Internet everywhere in France. Starting at 5 euros a days, sharable among 10 devices.

Anyone wish to comment on whether this is worth the cost? I will not be able to find a cafe as I am with a group and (almost) every waking moment is scheduled.

These devices have been in use from various providers (usually the cell phone provider) for several years now.

If every waking moment is scheduled maybe you are over scheduled.

The functioning of the device will depend on decent 4G/3G signal. If you are in an area with only poor signal or poor 2G or 2.5G your wifi will be poor.

Is it worth the money? Only you know that.

I use whatever wifi is available at my hotel or roam onto the 3G to my iPhone.

I've never used such a device.

It may be beneficial to you.

You still have to pick it up and deliver it back. If all your time is scheduled when will you do that?

Colette,

A mobile hot spot would not be worth the cost for me, especially as the cost would be about Cdn$220 for a one month trip. I can access Wi-Fi easily in hotels and can get data on my iPhone without the hot spot, and since I usually travel solo the capability for 10 devices would not be of any use.

Thank you Nigel & Ken.

I will be on a pilgrimage. The schedule generally is: breakfast at 7:00 & on bus by 8A, visiting Marian sights & assisting at Mass, lunch, dinner about 7 - 8P when we get to the hotel, lights out about 10P. This is my 3rd pilgrimage. I yearn for the day husband is willing to go on a leisurely trip to Europe.

It wouldn't be worth it to me, either. I have had no problems at all finding wifi wherever I have been in Europe in recent years. Some hotels might have it only in the lobby, not in your room, but most have it.

I was curious about "travel WIFI". Thank you for the answers. Most always I find WIFI in the hotel lobbies. :-)

It sounds to me like you won't have much time to surf the net and also not much need to look up resources for your next destinations. Hotel Wi-Fi can usually keep you in touch once or twice per day. Some tour bus companies have also added Wi-Fi; I don't know about your bus company.

On a 2 week trip of Switzerland and France, every hotel had free wifi in the room EXCEPT the CDG Hilton. I just don't understand why the big-name hotels do that. They will gladly rent it to you unlike "lesser" chains that just throw it in. Pleasantly surprised how often I could get online.

And Swisscom has free sites all over the country, just don't do anything where security is an issue (like online banking).

Phred, maybe they figure if you can afford the big name hotels, you can afford a little more here and there for things like wifi. I have noticed the same thing - in hostals and small hotels, it's invariably free. At the Westin Palace in Madrid, you pay if you want it in your room instead of going to the lobby.

I think Travel Wifi is great. I used them last week while on vacation in Paris. The reason to use this is not to replace hotel or apartment wifi - it is to have wifi available while wandering around. I am always using my iPhone for its maps and directions, and to call Uber cars or make online arrangements. Internet access from my home country company is outrageously expensive. This way I never was without my own fast wifi. Also, my wife could use it at the same time. For us it was certainly worth the cost, which is not very much.
