Tethering devices to a mobile--why get a wifi hotspot?

I'm a little confused. I've been investigating mobile plans and I see mentions of buying a wifi hotpspot. In Canada/US, I just set up a portable hot spot with my phone and login from the other device. Will this not work in Europe?

It would work, but you'd have to pay for your phone to access the network, as you presumably don't have a European plan for your phone. At home you're already paying for access to the network, so you're able to tether onto that connection. But in Europe first you'll need to pay for the connection before you can tether to it.

You may be able to buy a data only SIM depending on where you are and tether with that but in my experience, a MyFI usually works out cheaper. They're pretty easy to come by.

The mobile phone hotspot feature is dependent upon the carrier and possibly the phone. So if you need this feature you need to confirm that the carrier will allow it.
