Struggles with Google MyMaps

I'm building maps for an upcoming trip. For the second time in recent weeks, Google Maps is sputtering. The most recent problems began last night and are continuing. I've tried both Edge and Chrome. I'm getting error messages from the website itself, so it seems pretty clear the issue is with the server hosting MyMaps, not my PC or my ISP. (I'm on the East Coast.)

What's happening is this: A map loads, but slowly. I add a pin and change the icon. At some point after that, MyMaps stops responding and displays a message, telling me I may lose any changes I make and need to reload. When I reload, the recently-added pin is either missing or has the original default icon. It's basically not possible to create a new map or add pins to an old one right now.

Thought others might like to know it would be smart to allow some extra time for work on MyMaps. It concerns me that this is the second protracted problem cycle I've experienced this month. However, I am able to load my existing maps, though slowly, so I hope those on the road who are trying to use MyMaps are not having difficulties.

There was a period last night when even the basic Google Maps weren't working for me; that seems better now at a quick glance.

How frustrating ! I hope it will come back to normal soon.

I've been using Google My Maps in the past few weeks planning for an upcoming trip and have not yet noticed the issue you are reporting. I'm using it on Safari on my MacBook, so no overlap with you there. Just opened the map up to test it out now and still seems to be working normally. I'm guessing you've probably tried the usual computer restart, router reset, all that kind of thing, so it might be interesting to also try it on someone else's wifi or device and see how it goes.

That's interesting, Amy. Maybe it's a geographical thing--the location of the server(s) involved. There's been a spike in reported problems with ordinary Google Maps over the last 24 hours, but they may be concentrated in my area.

I've used Google Maps on and off all day long without any problems.

It started working again for me in the late afternoon. I think posting here fixed it!

It always does seem like the second I ask, the thing starts working! Glad it's running; My Maps is one of my favorite travel planning tools. I remember Google was supposedly going to retire it years ago but thank goodness they kept it!

@acraven, just in case it starts again, have you tried switching browsers? Sometimes I find that Chrome (if that's what you are using) can cause glitches in things like that. For example, a website that just won't load right in Chrome will be fine in Firefox or Safari. It's usually temporary but you might try that next time (although hopefully you won't need to)!

I tried both Edge and Chrome but had the same problem. I don't have Firefox on this computer, but that would be a good thing to try in the future.

I also have intermittent, but very persistent (off and on for over a year), issues with ViaMichelin.com when I use Edge. I've learned that it normally works fine with Chrome.

As a side note, MicroSoft Edge is based on Google Chrome modified to windows requirements. Try Firefox on your win pc as an alternate.
