Can you use a Sim card in an old iPhone? I would like to take a separate phone for internet use (directions, information) in Europe and keep my current one on airplane mode for use when wifi is available.

If you mean to buy a new SIM card and put it in the old phone, yes... as long as the old iPhone is unlocked (just call the carrier you had the phone's service through and they'll make sure all is okay).
If you mean to use your original SIM card in the old phone, while bringing your new phone (with its currently active SIM card) with you then likely not.

Things to consider include the specifications of the phone, size of the SIM card slot, GSM or CDMA technology if you decide to also use it for calling, and of course, as mentioned above whether or not it is unlocked. If you only plan to use it for WiFi then you have much less to consider.
