Positive Experience with Allianz Travel Insurance

Most of my travel life I never worried much about travel insurance. However my husband and I are in our late 70's and listening to the wisdom of our local RS Travel Group, I realized maybe I should pay a little attention........So, the past two years I have bought an Allianz All Trips Premier Plan for yearly coverage for both of us, mainly to get the benefit of some Emergency Medical and Emergency Transportation coverage in case we need it.

Fortunately we haven't needed it but - surprise, surprise - a few weeks ago I had to cancel a hiking trip in the Orkney Islands in Scotland two weeks before the trip for a medical mobility problem - way past the date for getting any refund for the tour. Fortunately I usually get refundable plane tickets so I knew my main loss would be the tour cost but gee I couldn't walk very well.

My Allianz policy did say that it included Trip Cancellation coverage so I decided to see if I could get reimbursed. Having never filled out an insurance claim before, it took two tries for me to submit all the info they wanted. Yesterday evening I was amazed that I received a note from them that my claim was accepted and would receive $5000 shortly. This morning the funds had been deposited in my bank account.

I hear a lot of stories about the difficulties of actually getting reimbursed from travel policies. Thought I would just share a good one.

Glad this worked out for you. We also had a good experience when I developed mobility problems in May/June 2025.

I hope your mobility is improving.

Thanks for the positive report. I’ve used Allianz for several years and luckily haven’t had to file a claim. It’s good to hear firsthand that it was worthwhile to get.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for posting this. As you know, we have the same Allianz Annual policy as you and it's very helpful to hear about a positive experience.

One question I have for you --- Did you need to get a note from your doctor to prove that you wouldn't be able to go on the tour? Any other 'proof' that we might not think about gathering for a claim?

Thank you Judy for sharing your experience. I have bought Allianz policies for the past few years, both per trip and annual. Fortunately I have not had to file a claim. Better safe than sorry! (I also buy an annual MedJet med evac policy.)

Hi Judy…so sorry to hear about your experience…hope you’re doing better and we see you soon!
SunnyBlueFlax, we have the same Allianz annual policy, and used it (for the first time and hopefully last) several years ago when we had to leave the RS 14 day Ireland tour. I don’t remember that we were required to include a note from John’s physician, but we did secure and include it anyway…the more documentation the better, I think. Our experience with Allianz was seamless, albeit a bit time consuming, which was understandable.

So sorry your trip fell through, but thanks for sharing this. I haven't used Allianz but I probably will get an annual policy because a friend had a very good experience with them after breaking a kneecap overseas -- responsive service, coordination with the French hospital and her hometown HMO, business class return flight, and a premium about half what I usually pay for a single trip.
