Photos, what's old is new again.

I had some photos printed yesterday and I asked the guy at the photo booth if it was a dying industry. He surprised me by saying that printed photos are making a comeback and he's been busier than ever the past year. I started Googling it and this article was the best I found explaining the surge, and it's thanks to Gen Z.

Printed photographs make a comeback as Gen Z print more than ever. https://share.google/JblPQy2u86VBcN7CV

We have 6-8×10 frames with 5 x7 travel photos within, in our living room and 6 in the kitchen. Every trip we replace 2 or 3 of the photos with the most recent. I'm curious now if you're trending back to printing some photos.

I've been enlarging and printing my travel photos all along - never stopped. I have framed photos from my travels all over my walls - living room, bedroom, and kitchen. I love being able to see them hanging there without having to open my laptop to see them.

When my computer came down, I had to buy. a new one and I lost so many of my pictures.

They were not on my iPad even though I took them with my iPad. They were not on Facebook even though i posted them on Facebook.

I called AppleCare and they tried to help but there was nothing that could be done.

My pictures were gone forever.

So sad.

I wouldn’t even know where to have prints made now since Costco quit doing them. I do print a few with photo paper & my home printer. That’s not a high quality print - more for family photos on the refrigerator.

The last time I had prints enlarged was in 2020 when we couldn’t travel because of Covid. I made a travel wall in my home travel-planning office of enlarged canvas prints.

Bostonphil7’s situation is one of the main reasons I make a travel photo book - now through Mixbook. We’ve had lost photos from photo technology changes.

I still make a photo album of every trip. Not the type that is made for you with uploaded photos, but one that I get the photos developed and put them in a simple album with a brief explanation. Here in western Canada, London Drugs develops film. I also use google photos to store my photos, making an album for each trip. I have a digital camera so I am happy to work on my photography skills while travelling and have an album to show for it after.

Pat, ohh, that’s exciting to look through your book and relive all of those memories! I’m afraid I have four I need to make by the end of July to catch up to my travel plans.

Is there no metric equivalent?

Photographic paper still hangs on to sizes in inches, at least here in the UK. Not sure about the continent.

Traditional sizes include 6x4. 5x7, 8x10, 12x16, 16x20 and 20x24.

Thinking about it, I've always called that size 10x8. A "ten eight" if you're working professionally.

I get prints made at Shutterfly (www.shutterfly,com). They are reasonably priced and I often get promotions from Best Buy purchases. They have a variety of sizes, finishes and savings options. It's nice to have prints available to give to relatives and friends. I am always pleased with the print quality and the quality of the image to be printed is the most important factor.

During the pandemic I used my time wisely. I had Shutterfly print some large canvases for Christmas gifts - for each trip I selected the best portrait of me and my partner and arranged them into a nice composition. These turned out great and get plenty of compliments. Their floating frames turned out better than those I've done myself for my own paintings. OI contacted them once when one of the canvases was not stretched as tight as I would have liked. They didn't ask me to return it for adjustment - they sent me a brand new one that was perfect. Of course I could redo the original myself so I have 2 perfect canvases of that piece. They sent the remake within 2 days and it was just before Christmas. I was very pleased with that.

I also used Shutterfly to make a hardbound book of photos from our first "honeymoon" trip decades ago - I labeled each location carefully and arranged them in their itinerary order to help us remember it in our hopefully far off dotage. We did the entire "Path of Progress" in western PA which coincided with both of our heritages. Our base was the Historic Summit Inn on the National Highway near Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. My partner's occupation and our membership in the conservatory enabled us to have full access to all aspects of Fallingwater's site. I'm glad we had documented our visits well.

I was glad I spent the time and money on these documents. They are priceless now,

Oh...and.....backup, backup and redundant backup. These multi-Terabyte drives are bargains now. You can even get a 2 Terabyte micro SD card for < $200.

I too am a fan of Shutterfly. Now that I take all my photos with my iPhone, I have the Shutterfly app on my phone & every photo I take is automatically downloaded to Shutterfly. So it’s an automatic back-up of all my photos.

When I want to print one of those photos — or make a photo book (which I do after each trip) the photos are already downloaded into my Shutterfly account.

During Covid, I actually took my pre-iPhone photo albums apart, scanned the photos & made Shutterfly photo books … so an 8-foot shelf of photo albums turned into an 8-inch stack of 8x11 photo books. Shutterfly has great text handling abilities so I was able to incorporate all the notes from the albums & journals as well.

I just received very nice canvas prints of 3 pictures my daughter has taken on trips from Mpix. They have sales all the time and I like their quality a lot better than Shutterfly. We use them for printing photos for the fair (4H family) and have always been happy. They process very quickly too (and receive very quickly because they're in Kansas and we're in Nebraska).

I've read other articles about Gen Z collecting records and other physical objects because of how much a person misses them when so much is digital. I love paper books and can hardly read books on my phone.

I do like the quality of Shutterfly.

In Minnesota, I like National Camera, but they've now moved to the very west metro and I'm south east.

I end up using Walgreens Photo for small jobs. They are two miles from my house. I always check my order before I leave and they are always happy to reprint.

Once in a while I will print and frame a photo from a trip. More often I get 4x6s for my refrigerator. Otherwise, I prefer to preserve my memories in photo books.

I do print out and frame photos of my granddaughters, much as I did when my sons were growing up.

I use Shutterfly. It’s easy, and cheap if you stick to their sales.
