Phone Use

Next month, we are traveling to Iceland and the Baltic region. I would like to be able to use my phone for checking email, looking something up on the Web, etc.

I am wondering about what the easiest means of doing this might be. I installed a virtual SIM for my last trip, but it was quite complicated and I could not be sure that it worked until I got there. I would be willing to pay more for something simple to relieve the stress.

If there are any recommendations for a non-technical person, then I would greatly appreciate the pointers.

If you have Verizon or ATT just upgrade to or add an international plan. Ours automatically kicks in when we travel internationally for something like $10/day or $100/mo during the time we are traveling. Then we never give it another thought.

I have Mint Mobile and they have an International plan. I wonder if it is as easy as pay and go, or if there is more to it than that.

"Why don't you contact Mint Mobile and ask?"

I did, but only got their AI bot. I tried asking my question, but it answered another question, then told me to go to their website or call back, then it hung up. That was not helpful.

Yes, I see that, but I do not know if I need to do something with my phone after activating. When I used an eSim before, I had to go through a tree of settings on my phone to tell it to use the eSim. Is this the same sort of thing, or does it work automatically?

If I could ask someone and get an answer, then that would be helpful, but it's difficult to find anything other than AI bots that don't understand questions these days.

It looks pretty straight forward when you look at the website that others have attached -
Choose the pass that works best for your trip. Buy ahead of time & activate when you arrive, or buy upon arrival & activate immediately.
If you've pre-purchased your pass, you'll receive a text message upon arrival to activate it, or you can activate via the app.
Once activated, you'll have 1, 3, 10 or 30 days to use the minutes, SMS & data included, depending on the pass you chose.

Double check their website to make sure they offer coverage in the countries you plan to travel.

I hope that it is that straightforward. The reason for my trepidation is that they used to have an International plan and I had money in it. When I arrived in Victoria I had no service and had to purchase a SIM. That is why I am looking for something simple and reliable.

When you dial Mint Mobile and it picks up, what does the Voice Message first say.

Does it say anything like How Can I Help You? I suggest that you say Live Agent or Customer Service or Sales and see if it lets you talk to a person.

How did you first sign up for Mint Mobile? Try calling that number as though you want new or additional service just to see if you get a live person and explain what is happening. Ask how you get to talk to a person at customer service.

Hi George. When in your hotel or anywhere else with access to wifi, you can use that for free access to email and web. But if you want 24 hour access when out an about, or want to easily make phone calls, then yes, you need a plan. My wife has Mint Mobile and has used the International plan in Europe the last two years in several countries including Latvia, Hungary, and Austria. It is simple and works great. Before you leave, or anytime in Europe, just access your Mint Mobile account (via wifi if in Europe) and sign up; no Sim or anything else required. I believe it was $20 for 10 days. Have great trip!
p.s. I just noticed on our credit card statement that the actual charge was $24.45, not $20. My wife said, yes, it was disclosed to her when she signed up that there would be this extra fee added, and she was OK with it.

@bostonphil7 That's why AI bots are spreading so much. They are replacing all of those people with bots.

Could try. They might not have gotten to those yet.

I have used AT& international service for several years. Once you sign up, it will kick in automatically when you turn on your phone overseas. You should check the coverage map to be sure it will work in a country where you plan to travel. We carry both our phone but try to limit use of the international charge on only one phone. As others have stated, hotel wifi will be free and incur no international charge. We find it helpful to use the phone for navigating around towns when sightseeing. Works just like the US!

I'm a fellow Minter and I've used them in Mexico, Germany, Austria, Italy and England. Not a lick of problem.

ESIM is 100% the way to go.

For what it's worth: Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile's (i.e. Detusche Telekom) network.

Their network has a lot of reciprocity in Europe.
