Online US Passport renewal-8 days!

... including Easter weekend. I've had a US passport for about 50 years.

I used the new "Online Renewal", for a passport that happened to expire yesterday. (As you know, it can still be renewed after it expires.) I paid with a credit card, and submitted the application on a weekend, April 13,2025. I requested routine processing. On 4/15/25, I got another email confirming that the payment of $120 succeeded, and my application was sent to processing. An email on 4/17/25 said the book was being printed, and another on 4/18/25 said it had been mailed Priority Mail. (the free shipping option.) It arrived today, 4/21/25

The new passport's number has a single letter at the beginning. It has the machine-readable symbol on the cover, and the same two lines of OCR data at the edge of the title page as usual. The entire title page is as thick and rigid as a credit card, and some key information, like my birth date and the expiration date, have raised printing. (Not "embossing".) There are three images of my face, each with a different degree of color and of size. My old passport is still on my desk at home.

I think this will be helpful not only to international travelers, but USA domestic travelers who have somehow managed not to get their Real ID by the May 7 deadline. This sounds much quicker and easier and far less painless than trying to get an appointment at the DMV!

Did you have any trouble taking your picture to upload with the application?

The website has a great deal of well-enough written instructions, including multiple examples of good and bad photographs. They specifically order you not to submit a selfie, I think because of the angle and close-up-ness. For example, they want absolutely no background texture, and air space between your shoulders and the edges of the photo. They describe having software to crop the photo, and ask you not to crop or adjust the photo you submit in any way. I used an Iphone16e.

I had my wife take the photo, without any special lighting, and selected one that was most like the examples given. Mouth closed, neutral expression.

I'm interested how little color there is in the "laminated" photo, but the photo printed on the facing, first passport page does have color. But it also has wavy, tamper-resistant overprinting, so you have to hold it away from yourself to "look" at that version of the photo.

Thank you for the information. I will be doing this next month after I get home from Canada.

"My old passport is still on my desk at home."

It's a good idea to bring along an expired passport for future trips (packed separately from the current passport). In the event one were to lose their passport while traveling abroad and needing to apply for an emergency passport at a U.S. embassy; an expired U.S. passport (full validity, undamaged) can be used as proof of U.S. citizenship.

I had no idea the online renewal process had become that efficient! Eight days is seriously impressive, especially including a weekend and free shipping. It’s encouraging to see government services actually streamline something like this. I really appreciate you walking through the whole timeline and details of the new passport — super helpful for anyone considering a renewal soon. Definitely bookmarking this thread for the future!

Somewhereintime, as you know, they used to perforate-cancel passports and return them to you upon renewal. So I'm inclined to accept your analysis. But I want to note that the instruction pages for Online Renewal noted that the old passport would no longer be
"valid" after the renewal process was completed. I think they meant to warn you about renewed passports that had a long time to expiry, unlike mine!

I don't mean to quibble, it's just that it's purely a legal/rules matter.
