On table hook that holds purse

I'd heard of these. Don't know how common they are but this one popped up on Kevin Kelley's site.

A 3" silver ring that folds flat. Unfolds to the ring that stays on the table and a hook that dangles underneath.

I know it gets the purse off of your lap, but I fail to see how it's any more secure than hanging your purse on your chair. Still would be easy for someone to grab it and run.

Well, it's better than a bag on the floor/ground. But, I agree with Nancy. It is not going to protect anyone from a purse getting snatched.

The idea behind these hooks is not to secure your purse, but to keep your purse off from the floor. A friend of mine who lives on a Caribbean island always uses one of these hooks when she goes for lunch or dinner in beach club type restaurants.

I encountered these in Japan. I appreciated having an alternative to keeping my purse around my neck/on my lap while eating, or on the floor. The bag isn't as visible or vulnerable as having it slung behind you on a chair, I think. And I placed it beside me, not on the adjacent side of the table as shown in the photo. Would I use it if I was seated in a high traffic area? Probably not. In a café or restaurant at a table against a wall.? Yes.

Well depends on what you expect of hook - yes keeps purse off floor .

No does not secure it from run by and grabs -

I eat with my purse either in my lap or straps wrapped around my legs and between my feet .

Also avoid sitting on outer perimeter of an outdoor cafe - even inside be careful - tables are often very close together - anyone can brush by.

I just ordered it. Thank you! I am tired of having my purse strap over my shoulder and my purse in my lap while eating in a restaurant. For me, keeping my purse visible and near me is important. I wouldn't be able to relax with my purse behind me hooked over the back of the chair.

We have always put day bags and purses over the back of the chairs. But -- make absolutely certain that the bag is firmly attached to the chair. Either wrap a bag strap about the back or the chair or a leg. That way if someone grabs the bag, the chair has to go with it. I actually use a giant twisty tie that is about a foot, maybe 18" long that will secure the bag to just anything. The twist tie is actually used hold coiled hoses and electrical cords. Not the greatest solution but it has worked for us for years.

I have one of these. It does not work very well on all tables. It depends on the thickness of the table. I no longer bother carrying it with me.

I wear a crossbody purse at home & when traveling. When I’m eating, I just slip the strap back, so it’s around my waist & my purse is both secure and doesn’t get dirty on the floor.

I use those here in France all.the.time since I received the first one as a gift in 2007. I keep my purse or small daypack right next to my leg where I can feel it. The purse hangs under the table. Never had a problem in all these years. https://www.pylones.com/fr/494-accroche-sac-a-main

They are 10€ here in France, usually come in two sizes. You can find them at the souvenir shops, or Pylones, one of which is in the Carrousel du Louvre shopping mall, and others scattered around the city.

They make good little gifts, as does nearly anything from Pylones.

I was given one in a bar one day, to hang my backpack full of potting soil.

Honestly, it put your bag where you will see it, and its off the floor and if you arent in Barcelona or Paris it seems like a good idea.

I use it in Paris all the time. No problem. Personal on-the-ground experience not perception.

In many cafes, bars, and restaurants in the UK you will find bag hooks already attached to the tables. These are designed for security purposes rather than to keep your bag off the floor, so are more secure than these temporary hooks. I’m sure they have similar across the rest of Europe.

I use one like the design in the OP's post to hold my folding cane. Keeps it from falling over and keeps it from being a trip hazard. I wear a waist pack for a purse, so it's never a problem. If I were going to hang a purse, I'd place the hook directly in front of me so the purse would hang down between my legs.

I've seen many places with bar seating that have permanent hooks under the bar for purses. Usually a double hook between two seats.

And yes, it will not work if the table to too thick. But there are various designs of these things, so another style may work fine with a thicker table.

I've been given three of these by staff in various bar/restaurants in Spain. They worked when I was there, but I can't figure out if they no longer work, or if I am trying to use them wrong when trying them at home at my dining table.
Are they magnetic? One of them is very pretty and I thought of taking it along on n upcoming trip to Spain...but hanging the bag seems to drag the round part off the table.....(??). I can't imagine why each worked in Spain but not at home...? I admit I am pretty inept with anything even remotely technical or gadgety.

For anyone open to a more versatile general purpose hook/clip, the one I really like is the HeroClip which I heard about from other travelers. Although it looks like a carabiner and that is one of its uses, it swings open to use as a strong, simple bag hook. The larger sizes can either hang a bag off a table as hook, or when closed it can keep a bag strap secured around a chair frame, post, etc. When closed as a carabiner it can help secure things to your bag or hang items from it like a water bottle.

So basically you can both hang your bag off it and also hang things from your bag with it. I always have one in my day bag.

Even though the HeroClip is more expensive and is more utilitarian looking compared to the first Amazon link in this thread, the build quality is high and it would never "break on the second use" like some of the reviews of the Amazon item said.

That’s ugly as sin. No sense of aesthetics, just mountain climber utility. Mine have lovely designs on them. After all, it attaches to the table where you eat.

"That’s ugly as sin"

Yep. I like it.

But I'm a guy. :)

(edit: And an Engineer. I've been told that's pertinent. :)

I've been following this topic and have been surprised at the less than enthusiastic responses to table hooks. I'm in agreement with Elizabeth (L'Occitane) about their usefulness.
I wonder if it is a "French" thing because we first became aware of their existence in Paris several years ago. We were seated at an outside cafe in Paris when 2 ladies sat down next to us, and one of them promptly took out her table hook. I was "Hooked!" I immediately began searching for them.
I have purchased more than I will ever need because they are sort of a souvenir for me. I have bought them at Giverny, Pompidou, Eiffel Tower, and Pylones stores. Very utilitarian and colorful souvenirs!
I always have one in whatever "purse" I am using (sling bag, small backpack). Very rarely do they not work on a restaurant's table. My husband also has one in his sling which he uses frequently.

I don’t think it’s ugly, I think it could have been much uglier but I like the colors it comes in and the general form. I appreciate design and I think the HeroClip does have a sense of aesthetics, it’s just that it’s a modern minimalist aesthetic. However, I did suspect that some would feel negatively about it when I saw the pictures of the Amazon item with its shiny chrome and pretty designs. I am not saying that's bad, but it does help show that there are a range of these hooks for different markets.

I like the HeroClip because I am using it with my travel day pack of synthetic colored fabric, so the HeroClip fits right in. And I do need to use it as a security fastener or extra-carry carabiner as well as a bag hook for tables and public bathrooms, so I like the different things it does. One of the things I like about the HeroClip is that the end of the hook part is rubber, making it both slip-resistant and won’t scratch what it’s on. There are several thoughtful functional things about it that make me appreciate it more than a simple hook.

However I do agree completely that if the main purpose is to hang a good-looking purse from a table, then yes, avoid the carabiner style and stick to the more elegant design. The HeroClip would look a little brutal if only used for that.
