Old Ipad is heavy, will an Iphone 6plus work similar to an Ipad?

I have an older heavy Ipad. When travelling, I use it to read books in Ibooks, post in FB! Save my photos, email family, research travel stuff and amuse myself with games. I have an Iphone 4, which serves me well as a phone. I do bring it on vacation but use it minimally as a phone. I do carry it during on all travel days for emergency calls and as a compass.

Would it be sensible to get an Iphone 6plus to use as a phone and do things that my Ipad would do and save weight? The cost is a bit crazy imho.

I am always trying to save weight when travelling carryon. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

It strikes me that it's your call about how large the type needs to be for you to read it comfortably. I have traveled with an iPod touch, and that was fine for reading, watching videos, doing email, and checking travel information. For my last few trips, my iPhone5 has served that purpose well. The iPhone6 and 6+ are really too big for my hand, but if you need relatively large type then a 6+ might be a good, but expensive solution. A less expensive solution might be one of the lower-priced android tablets.

I think you've laid out the issues well yourself. As usual, there are tradeoffs between cost, weight, and usability. It's your call if you want to get a new phone, and if the iPhone 6Plus is too large for regular use for you (will it fit in your purse or pocket? will you want to carry it everywhere?). I agree that if you don't want a new iPhone, you can certainly get a new, smaller tablet for less money, to replace your iPad.

Hi June, I have a iPhone 6 plus and I love mine. I am only 5'1 an a small person but it fits in my hand just fine. It's really up to you what to choose. If you need a new phone I would get it. If you don't need a new phone you can buy another tablet for about $100.00

June,

I use an iPhone 5 and an iPad mini. For me , the iPhone just would not work for reading. The iPad mini is very light and goes in my messenger bag with me everywhere.

I am glad to see someone has had good experience with an iPad Mini. Wifi reception with mine has has been fine if I am going to the local Panera or a McDonald's, places with strong wifi signals, and, of course within a few feet of my modem at home. But it was a huge flop in the hotels I stayed in in Germany that offered free but weak wifi. Even when it would pick up a signal in a lobby, the signal would keep going in and out, especially if there were a couple of laptops operating in the vicinity. I never had that problem with my laptop, but I left it at home last time.

BTW, the signal goes in and out for the Mini in some rooms in my house, while that almost never happens with the laptop. That was the cheapest model iPad they had when I bought it a couple of years ago, so I should have paid more for a larger iPad or a mini with more power for better reception. I do have an iPhone 6, so the mini seems redundant, anyway.

Hi Roy. I have not had that problem with my mini at all. I did not buy the first generation of the mini. I could easily be wrong on this but I don't think the wifi is any different from one mini to the other for a particular version bought in a given time frame. From year to year, it would seem more likely.

I just bought the IPhone 6 (not the plus) and found the increase in size just enough to make reading tolerable. I use it as a phone a lot so the plus was too big for that, in my opinion.

Tip- I got my phone from best buy. They had many "Geek squad" approved returned iPhone 6/iPhone 6 plus that people returned because they wanted a different color, or they bought the 6 and wanted the plus, etc. It was a nice cost savings and I haven't had any problems with the phone. My mom did the same thing.

So true about the iPad mini. I love that it fits in my diminutive camera bag, but the 'reception' is just horrible. Hopefully version 6 of the phone has improved the WiFi connectivity and these upgrades will permeate the rest of the product line.

I may just get "...one of the lower-priced android tablets" just to see if my current premise of blaming the Mini for spotty WiFi is justified.

June, if you think you will enjoy using the iPhone 6plus after you return from your trip, or are planning to upgrade at some point anyway, than it is worth it.

I recently upgraded from iPhone 4 to 6 (regular, not plus). I have found the 6 so 'huge' in comparison to the 4 that I'm not going to take my iPad. If I didn't actually make phone calls that often, I would have gotten the 6plus.

If you want to download photos, check to see if it can be done on the iPhone 6S. I did not think that was possible, although I could be wrong.

I learned long ago not to buy the base model of anything, but I forget that lesson from time to time.
