Making phone calls in Europe

I am planning to create contacts in my iPhone for important numbers during our trip to Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg and Munich so I don't have to look through various papers in our itinerary for the phone numbers, in the case that I would need to call a hotel, etc. My question is; would I put the "+" that is always listed on all of the European phone numbers first, followed by the phone number? I will have an international calling plan enabled through Verizon.
Thank you

I saw a thread a little farther down the Technology Tips page that pretty much answered all of my questions as well as others that I had not even thought of! Thanks

The safe thing to do is put in:

+ {country code} {area code} {number}

This includes numbers in your own country. You won't be charged extra for putting in + {country code} when you are already in the country, and it will then work whether you are in the country or not, and whether you have a local SIM card installed, or your original one from your home country.

From a land line you dial:

  • From within the same area: {number}
  • From a different area of the same country: 0 {area code} {number}
  • From a different country: 00 {country code} {area code} {number}

Numbers are often quoted with the "0" at the front of the Area Code. For example, an Austrian number "01 xxx xxxx" is a number in Vienna (01). From outside Austria (country code 43) you dial:
00 43 1 xxx xxxx or from a mobile: + 43 1 xxx xxxx
